www.womanthismonth.com April 2017 6 What a lot there is happening this month. All the new spring-summer fashions are finally in the shops and I've been looking through hundreds [possibly even thousands] of catwalk images to pick out the trends for the coming season. As usual, many of the designers' visions are more than a little over the top. Even the most bold and confident of us would be unlikely to venture out naked with just a shred of finest, transparent gossamer to protect our modesty [thank goodness]. I've had great fun coming up with ways to adapt the current trends to our everyday lives and I'm really looking forward to donning a bit of boho punk. Let us know your favourite trend on our social media pages. Our interview section this month includes an exclusive chat with Katrina Kaif. She's ambassador for one of the biggest fashion and lifestyle brands in the region and we met her when she visited for the launch of the latest collections. It was lovely to learn those dangerous curves don't make it to the gym every day! We also caught up with entrepreneur Francine Pinhal who's about to launch her own factory and food business. As well as new collections, spring is the time when many of us start thinking about our annual vacation. If you're not heading 'home', the decision on where to go can be a tough one. Take a look at our travel pages for a solution which covers several destinations in one go There’s also our regular round-up of fashion and beauty news, events coming up on the island and fabulous food as well as an in-depth look at insomnia in our wellbeing pages and some thoughts on the increasingly popular Mummy Makeover from a medical expert. We hope you enjoy this month's mag and would love to hear your thoughts. chairman & publisher GEORGE F MIDDLETON editorial director LIZ O'REILLY contributors APPLE SHARMA BEHNAZ SANJANA PUJA TIWARI DR JINAN DARWISH RAPHAEL OUIAM CHARKANI EL HASSANI head of digital operations NEIL F VAZ print production manager SABU SEBASTIAN layout & graphics ROMEO SAN MIGUEL JAYATH TEKI media coordinator SARAH ANSARI media managers FARHEEN AHMED circulation KADAMBARI S research assistant, sales and database coordinator ADITI PRASAD photography editor MONA ABDUL JABBAR photographers RANJITH MOHAN SUBEESH KUMAR NS printing press UNION PRESS, BAHRAIN Contents copyrighted 2017© Reproduction in whole or in part by any means without the express written consent of the publisher is prohibited. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com news 8 Over to you # Trending What’s caught our eye in the news this month. #Tasmania’s Preservation Bay has presented a magical sight to onlookers in recent days with blue glowing waters lapping on the shore. Known as bioluminescence, this phenomenon occurs when waves shake up algae or plankton cells known as Noctiluca scintillans and make them glow in the water. The algae flashes this way as a defence against predators and poses no threat to humans, although it can carry risks for shellfish. globalnews.ca #The Necker Children’s Hospital in Paris has successfully carried out the first procedure on a sickle cell disease patient that has completely rid him of any symptoms, pain or medications associated with the disease. The teenager underwent the procedure 15 months ago, where doctors removed his bone marrow and scientists genetically altered it in a lab to compensate for the defect in his DNA that caused the disease. The corrected bone marrow was then put back into the patient. bbc.com Win, Win, Win! The spring season is the time when many major brands launch their new fragrances. For its latest offering, French brand L’Occitane went back to the very source of the beauty of Provence. It wanted to find the force that breathes life into plants – the very plants that become its precious ingredients. Every trail it followed led to the light. It seemed to shift, its colours pulsing and rippling. Three perfumers worked on the creation of Terre de Lumière: Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu and Nadège Le Garlantezec. “It really was a journey for us. Each one brought her own world, her own emotions. This fragrance brings together, in perfect harmony, so many sensations that come from our experiences. That’s what gives it so many facets,” they say. The fragrance truly is akin to a breath of Provencal air in a bottle. For a chance to win the 90ml eau de parfum, worth almost BD40, keep an eye on our social media page to participate. On Facebook, the post for the first competition of the month received the most engagement On Instagram, the contest giving away tickets to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night got the highest number of likes and comments. On Twitter, our tweet about the exciting new Bahrain Food Festival received the highest engagement. Your Shout Your page featuring mums and daughters dressing alike made me feel nostalgic. I remember my own mother having breezy summer frocks tailormade for herself, and a mini version for me. I must have been all of seven or eight at the time. I wonder why I never thought of doing the same with my daughter. I’m off to buy us some material now, thank you very much! Rebecca. I like the range of women you introduce your readers to. Reading about the ladies in your last issue, their life’s work and goals, provided food for thought. It was delightful to read Maya Jashanmal’s reminiscing about her years in Bahrain and Jodie Baker’s travels exploring our world and her passion for photography. Both were motivating. Lastly, it’s a relief that Bahrain has specialists like Dr Iris Brune Erber who can help women overcome some very private, yet grave, physical concerns. I’m sure the local flavour of your interviews serves to be all the more inspiring to the women of Bahrain. Naseema. Got something you want to get off your chest? April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com news 10 What’s on our radar this month? April in Focus If, like us, you have a drawer full of gently-used bras that you don’t wear but that are ‘too good’ to chuck, then we have the answer. Editor Liz was in that position when a friend left behind quite a haul of rather fancy lingerie. Hoping to hand it over to charity, she put an ask on social media and was met with a great response from Louise Wrankmore of TDK Lingerie. Faced with an ever-growing pile of bras left behind by women who’d come in for fittings and left wearing a completely different size, Louise decided to put them to good use. She got in touch with Bahrain’s women’s refuge and also the women’s prison and hopes to hand over the first batch of 500 by the end of the month. So now you know, it’s time to give the lingerie drawer a spring clean. Bra-vo Good Wood We love a success story, especially when it’s one of the family, as it were. WoodWorks, a student-run start-up led, under the guidance of Injaz Bahrain, by Simran Tiwari – sister of our very own Puja – manufactures unique Shelf-It shelves made from recycled MDF wood. The product can be used in a variety of ways to store and place almost anything. It also represents environmental conservation and comes in a variety of colours and customdesigned styles. The company works with local craftsmen and was started to enhance awareness of entrepreneurship among young people. So far, the first three batches have sold out and the founders of the company are constantly looking for ways to improve their creation. Follow woodworks on Instagram @woodworks_bh and WoodWorks Bahrain on Facebook. Bringing Home Medals Young inventor Tasneem Yousif represented Bahrain at the recent 9th International Inventions Fair Middle East and came home with a silver medal for her Smart Gas System which allows the detection of toxic gasses remotely, using a mobile phone application or web-based option linked to nanotechnology robotics. Tasneem’s win came under the category of electronics and smart computing systems and she was also recognised for scientific excellence. The system was initially created as a graduation project when Tasneem was studying computer engineering and she has since gone on to develop it further. It is now at the stage where it has received a patent. Girl Power The 61st session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women recently saw the launch of the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Global Award for Women Empowerment, which aims to recognise the achievements of individuals or establishments in the public and private sectors that support the developmental role of women as well as ensuring the highest degree of economic participation and social stability. The award was launched, on behalf of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and president of the Supreme Council for Women, by the Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, who said he was looking forward to supporting the activities of the commission aimed at achieving a balance between equality and the empowerment of women. The entertainment line-up has been announced for Formula One weekend and, though we’re still waiting to hear about the expected big names, there’s loads to look forward to. We’re particularly excited about the appearances of Pedal Punk and the Flight Crew jump ropers. You can find all the details online at our sister publication Bahrain This Month’s website and we’ll be bringing you news of more acts as we get it. F1 Fun

www.womanthismonth.com April 2017 FASHION | trend 19 By Liz O’Reilly The new season’s styles are finally here and we’re loving the latest looks. From bell-bottomed jeans to giant shoulders and the, seemingly incongruous, marriage of the already much-loved boho style with a dash of retro punk, this season is an everywoman mix. As always, we’ve gathered together the cream of the catwalk looks and come up with some style inspiration to help you adapt them to everyday wear. Dig out your old patched jean jacket, splash out on a pair of ridiculously high platforms and get ready to embrace the new season’s trends. 20 Flash the Flesh 22 Armed and Dangerous 26 Boho Meets Punk 28 All White Now 30 Pretty in Pink 32 Badge of Honour SPRING SUMMER 2017

April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | trend 20 This trend is all about playing peek-a-boo, using swathes of sheer fabric to appear covered but at the same time revealing flashes of skin. Legs were much in evidence on the catwalks at Carolina Herrera, Desigual, Lanvin and Viktor & Rolf with long see-through skirts offering an ethereal edge to often tough, urban looks. Paco Rabanne took the look to another level, sending models down the runway with covered heads but exposed legs sheathed in sparkling overlay, while Versace put a decidedly classic twist on the trend using sheer fabric and lace cut-outs in deepest midnight blue. WEAR IT YOUR WAY Perhaps not surprisingly, this trend is taking a little longer to filter down to the high street. It takes good legs and a daring spirit to encase hotpants-clad pins in sheer shimmering fabric. But if you want to get in on the act just think of it as an extension of last year’s lingerie as outerwear phase. A close-fitting body beneath a lacy shift will preserve your modesty. Not feeling quite so confident? Opt for an iridescent shell top over a lacy cami or channel your inner ballerina with a tutu-style skirt. Add interesting accessories and hold your head high. Flash The Flesh DO IT Nightclub; decadent beach party; fashion show. DITCH IT Professional presentation; corporate job interview. Viktor & Rolf Desigual Carven Versace Women OOPS! April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | trend 22 The fashion world seems have a burgeoning love affair with the ‘80s. Last season saw the return of Dynastyesque shoulder pads and this year’s collections go a step further with outright bonkers sleeve details. From armour-like embellishments at Kenzo and Dsquared2 to flowing elongated bells at Carven, Loewe and Paul Smith. The Marc Jacobs show featured a whole range of options from discrete puffs to feather epaulettes, embroidery and frills. And Gucci – how we love Gucci – always awesomely daring, darling and slightly dotty. WEAR IT YOUR WAY There’s a dazzling array of statement sleeves available on the high street right now from cutouts at Bershka to tassels at Zadig & Voltaire. However you choose to wear yours, we suggest going the whole hog and adding a pair of bell-bottom pants into the mix for full effect. Not feeling quite that fashion confident? Adapt the look with gently flared sleeves and a pair of plain cigarette pants. And, since this style is really quite loud and mobile, it lends itself to ballet flats for a night of dancing without losing impact. Armed and Dangerous DO IT Girls’ night; salsa party. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com showcase 24 The word 'alba' is an ancient word for ‘dawn’, as used centuries ago and passed down the generations in the Spanish and Italian languages. It denotes light, hope and new beginnings. World-renowned Japanese watchmaker Seiko Watch Corporation chose this symbolic name for the unique timepiece it unveiled to the world in 1979. The line went on to become an instant sensation for its value, design and quality backed at every level by Seiko. This collection presents an exceptional line of watches with fresh and novel designs that complement the quintessential urban lifestyle. Available in four distinct collections – Sign A, Prestige, Active and Fashion – Alba exemplifies the great watchmaking credentials established by its parent company. The three salient features every Alba wristwatch exhibits make it stand out from the rest – a truly distinctive design, quality that takes great pride in being superior and price that’s incredibly affordable. Moreover, every element in these timepieces carries the mark of trust that Seiko has been upholding for decades, which earns and holds the company’s loyal customer base. The brand’s superlative aesthetics and durability resonate with people who cherish life and strive to make the most of it. It is little wonder then that Alba has grown rapidly all across Asia and the Middle East, with new satisfied customers being added to the label’s fan following every day. Whether you are a man who enjoys sport on the field and in the boardroom or a lady who aims to break the glass ceiling and equally enjoys social hobnobbing, Alba offers various categories to blend into your way of life. So whether for work or play, an Alba timepiece makes a style statement that is hard to miss, being a constant companion that reminds you to bring out the best in yourself at all times. In Bahrain, Seiko and Alba watches are exclusively available at Ambassador Stores, a dealership that has earned a reputation for providing high-performance products, customer-friendly service and excellent value for money. Located on Government Avenue close to Bab Al Bahrain, the company is also the agent of Yamaha, one of the world’s leading high-end professional musical equipment and audio/video brands. The showroom opens from 8.30am to 12.30pm and 3.30pm to 7.30pm from Saturday to Thursday. Call 17 225-513. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | trend 26 There’s always one that comes as a bit of a surprise and shouldn’t work but does. For us, this season, it’s the combination of boho and punk. Coach rocked both this and the transparent trend, sending models down the runway in leather and lace, flowers and studs. At Desigual is was camo with tribal face paint while Carven, Dsquared2, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger all put legs centre stage with micro minis topped with everything from acid-wash denim to dayglo PVC. Team a leather mini with a floral jacket, a sequinned skirt with psychedelic tights and top it all off with animal print. Shoes can be flat and funky or gravity-defying. However you choose to channel this look, the key ingredient is confidence. With this one, there are no rules, hold your head up and strut your stuff like a punky-boho princess. Carven Dsquared2

April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | trend 28 Paler colours have had a resurgence for spring with lots of the big houses showing full-on, head-to-toe white looks to great effect. From ‘70s-inspired catsuits at Alice + Olivia to a chucked together, festival-style look with striking accessories at Desigual, the big names showed that keeping it simple doesn’t have to be boring. Carolina Herrera, Carven and Michael Kors accentuated dazzling whites with flashes of black, taupe and navy respectively, while Fenty Puma and Marc Jacobs went for slightly bonkers but nonetheless effective layered looks. WEAR IT YOUR WAY This is a trend that could be tailor-made for our part of the world. Glorious, almost year-round sunshine means we never need an excuse to don an all-white outfit and if it’s coupled with a light tan, all the better (but don’t forget the sun screen). Team loose white linen pants with a statement self-patterned top for a look that never dates. Or channel a more fashion-forward style with edgy ripped jeans and a slogan tee. Not sure you want to go all the way? You can rarely go wrong with white jeans worn with a coloured top or add extra interest to an all-white ensemble with colour-pop shoes or accessories. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | trend 30 This most ladylike and girly of colours made a showing on the autumwinter catwalks and has really come into its own for the coming season. From the outlandish at Gucci to pale and pretty at Paule Ka, pink is most definitely having a moment. Michael Kors went for classic floral with a retro patterned twist while Paskal, showing in Paris, went for pink frills on a white background. WEAR IT YOUR WAY There’s an abundance of pink in the shops at the moment from bubblegum to deepest cerise via neon brights. First decide just how far you want to go as head-to-toe pink, even the most pastel variety, can be a little cloying. If you opt for a pink dress, look out for contrasting accessories – black and white are always a good option. If you do decide to stick with pink, consider mixing up your shades to add interest. And if you want to get in on the act but are not completely committed, add pink accessories to jeans or dark pants in a show of fashion cred. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | trend 32 Many of us will remember these from our youth – raggedly stitching patches onto denim jackets, jeans and anything else our mums would let us get away with. It seems the fashion world has taken a step back and resurrected a look much loved in the ‘70s, with embellishment appearing on the runways at Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Desigual and Alice + Olivia while Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui and Ralph Lauren ramped up the glamour stakes emblazoning badges and embroidery on classic leather and in cowboy style. WEAR IT YOUR WAY This trend yells young and fun, at the top of its voice. High street stores have embraced it with gusto, from bags to jackets, to jeans and even boots. Choose your style wisely and don’t overdo it. The patched jacket is something of a classic but, even if you’re brave enough for double denim, make sure your lower half is plain. An embellished mini will look great with a simple vest and casual wrap. Badge of Honour DO IT Flea market; the movies; a bar. DITCH IT Professional presentation; meeting your kid’s teacher. DIY DETAILS You can adapt the trend to your own style by adding pretty badges yourself – perhaps a bird or butterfly on the hem of your pants, subtle but at the same time showing your fashion chops. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com showcase 34 Since the 1700s, exquisite jewellery designed by the House of Garrard has been passed on as priceless heritage from one generation to the next. The designs created by this royally commissioned jeweller are eternal classics that have stood the test of time, instead of pandering to temporary fashions. Having had the honour of being appointed as jewellers to the crown by Queen Victoria in 1843, the House of Garrard displayed close to 100 works of jewellery, silverware and trophies, inspired by its numerous commissions for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, both of whom shared a passion for fine design, at the Great Exhibition which took place in London in 1851. The precious pieces featured fine turquoise, beautiful blue sapphires, diamonds and other valuable gems set in quirky designs such as ‘fly’ brooches – the Queen’s personal favourite, and favoured by the Victorian people for denoting This collection from the longest serving jewellery house in the world is bound to bedazzle lovers of whimsical, vintage heirlooms. ASIA JEWELLERS ENDURING ELEGANCE humility and freedom. This treasure trove of pieces and the architectural design of the Crystal Palace in London’s Hyde Park, where they were exhibited over a century ago, is the very inspiration behind Garrard’s modern collection – the Enchanted Palace, which is as varied and mesmerising as the original exhibition. The range features items from small, delicate turquoise and diamond-encrusted winged creations to stunning pieces that reveal diamond or sapphire with each twist and rock crystal windows studded with diamonds. Also available are versatile, multiwear pendants and earrings with removable tassels and drops, making the collection absolutely delightful to behold. As well as paying tribute to a very important moment in Garrard’s history and the legacy that the house has given the world, the Enchanted Palace collection celebrates the fun and whimsical side of design, as embraced by the Victorians. Each piece is a symbol of master craftsmanship. There is a breathtaking simplicity to the design but the pieces are incredibly technical in construction, thereby perfectly capturing the spirit of a bygone era. Every brilliant ornament from the Enchanted Palace collection bears the hallmark of the House of Garrard’s meticulous attention to detail, superb British design and a history of sophisticated style. Timeless pieces from this famed jeweller are brought to Bahrain by Asia Jewellers. Call Asia Jewellers, Moda Mall 17 534-444.

www.womanthismonth.com April 2017 PEOPLE | interview 39 Eminent for her chic style, the British actress and model donned two beautiful Splash ensembles and took to the ramp of a fashion show at the Mall of Emirates, Dubai, for the launch of the latest collections. Having travelled and lived around the world, she considers Mumbai in India her true heritage where identity is concerned. “Having lived there for the longest time, Mumbai is my home without a doubt,” she says. Katrina also let us in on her duties as the fashion envoy for Splash, saying: “As with any fashion campaign, the key role in promoting the brand is the visual campaign I’m doing, which is the second of the series. Splash has a very loyal fan base and is highly revered by consumers because of its passion for high street fashion, so it feels great to be a part of this.” In a quandary to choose a favourite piece, Katrina says the entire new collection has struck a special chord on her style radar. “The latest line is dreamy and beautiful, with a heavy Bohemian influence which makes it look very feminine. This works for me and I absolutely love it,” she explains. The actress isn’t one who carries any beauty essentials, and generally enjoys going au naturel when not filming on set. She says: “I always have a wonderful team of hairstylists and make-up artists on set, so I leave it up to them when shooting movies. When you spend so much time on set, the only thing you want to do is be natural and easy after you wrap up.” Katrina was thrilled to team up with actor Salman Khan for the most recent campaign, saying: “It was amazing working with him again. One thing I’ve noticed is that Splash CEO Reza Baig always treats staff and peers like family. Everyone there enjoys a close-knit relationship and I have always felt welcome.” Acting is something that is second nature to the star. “When I came into films, I was always very instinctive and fully immersed myself in the movie. Every molecule inside my body was alive on set. I think this is what makes a good movie,” she says. Blessed with glowing skin and a ravishing physique, Katrina does not follow a strict health or beauty regimen. She explains: “How you look and feel can be credited to your diet. A lot of people are conscious and know what is healthy for them. Fitness is not something I am 100 per cent consistent with, it’s something that I go up and down on in phases. Sometimes I follow a plan, especially while filming a movie, other times I just take it easy.” And she has a special message for her fans in Bahrain. “I would love to come down and visit when there is an opportunity, probably during a film festival or similar event. For now, a big hello to everyone who watches Hindi flicks.” g Bona fide Bollywood royalty and youth icon Katrina Kaif is one of cinema’s most glamorous actresses. She is currently the brand ambassador for retail fashion giant Splash, and is featured in the latest campaign across the Middle East. BTM caught up with her to talk fashion, beauty and more. April 2017 www.womanthismonth.com PEOPLE | interview 40 Brazilian Francine has been supplying friends and wordof-mouth customers with her homemade Brazilian cheese buns for around a year and a half but when demand went from 150 pieces a month to more than 2,000, she knew it was time to expand. The mum of two came to Bahrain 10 years ago and has been involved in the food and beverage industry for around 15 years. She was initially working with a Brazilian restaurant franchise before making the move into real estate, where she met her husband, who is also Brazilian. In time she became pregnant with her daughter Lilie, now five, and the couple took the decision that she would be a stay-at-home mum. But, says Francine: “I found myself with a tiny bump and a lot of time on my hands.” It was the first season of the Amwaj Marina Markets and she decided to bake some Brazilian cheese buns – an everyday food in her home country that is not found here in the Middle East – and, since then, she has never looked back. She says: “I came home with a lot but I also sold a lot. I did five or six markets and, before long, I became known as the Brazilian cheese bread lady.” She built up a following both at the markets and on Instagram but thought business would die down when Lilie started school and the family moved to Saar. However, orders in fact went from strength to strength. Francine explains: “I started off making between 100 and 150 cheese buns a month but by the time my little boy Enzo, who’s three, was starting nursery 18 month ago, I was producing 2,000, all in my home kitchen! “I had reached the point where I was just overwhelmed. I sat down with my husband and said ‘We either have to expand properly or accept that it can’t get any bigger.’ We decided to expand. “Initially I thought I needed a Bahraini partner to set up a business. I had a partner but he had to pull out. However, at that point, there was a window in which nonBahrainis could apply for a licence and I was very lucky to fall into that category – I believe this has now changed but my application was already in process. “It’s been a long journey. Because it’s food you have to deal with virtually every ministry to make sure all the regulations are covered. But we got there in the end and I’ve now launched a factory in Salmabad.” Francine’s buns are currently sold in Words Bookstore Café but she is also talking to supermarkets and still has many individual clients. She also wants to grow further and take her Brazilian cheese breads across the Gulf via her new company, Chipa. She says: “I do other things but the cheese buns are the main thing. They’re not new; if you speak to any Brazilian, they know them. In Brazil, if you have a coffee, you have a cheese bun; if a guest arrives at your home, you take a packet out of the freezer and put them in the oven. “But I have developed my own recipe and I love it that friends who travel to Brazil tell me mine are better than those of some of the biggest companies selling them there. “I think you can taste that what I do in the kitchen comes from the heart. I can’t describe how I feel when I am cooking but that energy comes out in my food. I was very privileged to realise my passion quite early; my happy place is in the kitchen. It’s a big family thing; I have Italian on both sides and the kitchen is where we all get together. “I believe I was put in the world to bring happiness through food, and that’s what I do.” g Young mum Francine Pinhal tells Liz O’Reilly how she is turning her love of cooking into a unique, 100-per-cent expat-owned, business.
