womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 INTERVIEW 4 For readers unfamiliar with the Chartered Institute of Building, could you provide a brief overview of its mission and your role within it? The CIOB is the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for people and communities by driving professionalism, integrity and innovation across the built environment. As Chair of the CIOB Bahrain Hub, my role is to lead our efforts in connecting industry professionals, academics and students to advance excellence in construction practices within Bahrain. We focus on promoting professional development, supporting emerging talent, and creating a collaborative platform where knowledge, ethics, and innovation in construction can thrive. Ultimately, our goal is to contribute to Bahrain’s sustainable development vision and the global advancement of our profession. How would you characterise the current state of Bahrain’s construction sector; and what one policy change would most improve project delivery? Bahrain’s construction sector continues to be one of the most dynamic in the region, with demand driven by both public infrastructure projects and private development. However, the industry still faces challenges that affect productivity and long-term sustainability. Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Bahrain Hub Chair Lina Saeed discusses professionalisation, sustainability, education reforms and digital tools reshaping the Kingdom’s construction sector, from NEC contracts to green roofs, while bridging academia and industry. Building A Better Bahrain
womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 INTERVIEW 5 Compared to other sectors, construction remains behind in terms of professionalisation, digital transformation and data-driven decisionmaking. The current market’s emphasis on the lowest price often compromises quality, sustainability and innovation and in some cases, it fuels adversarial relationships between project stakeholders rather than collaboration. Equally important is the need to prioritise employee wellbeing and workforce welfare. The construction industry is built on its people, and when workers feel valued, safe and supported, productivity, morale and craftsmanship all improve. One policy change I would strongly recommend is to enforce sustainability as a core evaluation criterion in both public and private sector projects. This would align Bahrain’s construction practices with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthen the country’s position as a regional leader in sustainable development. Finally, adopting more collaborative forms of contracting, such as the NEC suite, would foster trust, transparency and shared accountability among clients, consultants and contractors. How would you assess the interest in construction amongst Bahraini students in recent years and how are you tailoring the curriculum to support regional needs? We’re seeing growing interest in specialised pathways such as quantity surveying, construction project management and sustainability and quality management. Today’s generation is highly motivated by technology and the rise of artificial intelligence. At the university, our goal is to harness that enthusiasm and channel it into digitising the construction industry. We are embedding advanced software tools, AI, and machine learning applications into the learning experience to prepare students for the future of construction management. As a Chartered Construction Manager, which project management frameworks or tools have proven most effective in Bahrain’s regulatory and cultural context? In Bahrain’s regulatory and cultural context, successful project management depends on frameworks that balance structure, collaboration and adaptability. While traditional frameworks like the PMBOK remain valuable for governance and compliance, the most effective results often come from integrating Lean Construction principles with modern digital tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM). Lean Construction has proven especially relevant in Bahrain because it focuses on reducing waste, improving flow and maximising value while also fostering teamwork and continuous improvement. Lean offers a cultural shift toward respect for people, early stakeholder engagement, and transparency. Its effectiveness is also enhanced when paired with more collaborative contract models, such as the NEC suite, which encourage transparency and shared responsibility, a much-needed shift from the traditional adversarial approach. You have presented research on green roofs internationally. What is the realistic business case for green roofs in Bahrain’s climate? Green roofs have strong potential in Bahrain, but their success depends on establishing a clear and realistic business case. From my research comparing Bahrain and Singapore, we found that when designed with appropriate materials and irrigation systems, green roofs can significantly reduce energy consumption, and urban heat even in hot climates like ours. However, wider adoption requires policy support that embeds sustainability within building regulations. When sustainability becomes a compliance requirement rather than a voluntary effort, developers start to see green roofs as a long-term investment improving energy efficiency, reducing maintenance costs and enhancing property value. Can you tell us about the purpose of the British Embassy event held at the end of last month and your role in that? The event, titled ‘Building Bridges: Uniting Visions, Forging Futures,’ was a very special evening organised by the CIOB Bahrain Hub in collaboration with the British Embassy. Its purpose was to bring together academics, students and industry professionals to strengthen the connection between education and industry and to celebrate excellence in Bahrain’s construction community. We awarded CIOB Certificates of Excellence to outstanding graduates and presented Chartered Memberships to professionals who achieved one of the highest standards in construction management. Looking five years ahead, which construction technologies or procurement reforms do you expect to gain traction in Bahrain? Over the next five years, I expect Bahrain’s construction sector to embrace a wave of digital transformation driven by the adoption of BIM, digital twins, AI-powered project management and sustainability assessment tools. These technologies will redefine how projects are designed, delivered and maintained enabling more transparent, data-driven and sustainable outcomes. On the procurement side, I anticipate a gradual shift from traditional lowest-bid models toward value-based and collaborative contracting frameworks. These models will prioritise partnership, risk-sharing and whole-life project value, an approach that aligns perfectly with Bahrain’s vision for sustainable and efficient development. At the CIOB Bahrain Hub, our mission is to ensure our members are prepared to lead this transformation. We’re doing this by promoting continuing professional development, industryacademia collaboration and exposure to global best practices. Anything more to add? On a personal note, being part of CIOB has shown me how powerful shared purpose can be. Every event, every collaboration reminds me that we’re not just constructing buildings, we’re shaping the future of how people live, work and connect. I’m excited about what’s ahead for Bahrain’s construction industry and proud of the growing community of passionate professionals leading that change.
womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 LUXURY 6 Colourful Gemstones and Mixed Materials Vivid gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds and tourmalines are brightening jewellery boxes this season. Often paired with mixed metals or unexpected materials, they bring a lively and modern edge to classic design. From Lady Gaga’s colourful necklaces to Victoria Beckham’s striking rings, personality and colour now take centre stage. The Revival of Cord and Pendant The cord necklace is back, offering a tactile and personal way to wear jewellery. Crafted in silk, leather or rope and finished with a single pendant, it channels relaxed luxury. Seen on Zoë Kravitz and Dua Lipa, it bridges casual and formal dressing with effortless charm. From edgy chains to radiant pearls, this is a season shaped by self-expression and craftsmanship. Pearls, Pearls, Pearls! Once the symbol of classic femininity, pearls have been reborn as modern icons. Designers are experimenting with irregular baroque forms and bold pairings, mixing pearls with metals, chains and leather for a fresh, sculptural effect. Amal Clooney wore a stunning pearl encrusted gown to this year’s Tony Awards, truly embodying how pearls have become symbols of confidence rather than restraint. For lovers of authenticity, there is no better place to seek them than Bahrain. The Kingdom’s clear Gulf waters produce some of the world’s finest natural pearls, known for their purity and soft lustre. With a ban on artificial cultivation, every Bahraini pearl is a natural creation shaped entirely by the sea. Generations of skilled craftsmanship and careful trade have made Bahrain the definitive home of the natural pearl, a living emblem of heritage and artistry.

bahrainthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 INTERVIEW 8 Ms. Dawani did not so much find the role of Honorary Consul as it found her. She recalls being encouraged by predecessors and diplomats to consider the position, and from the outset she embraced its purpose: “I was approached by Jaap Vaandrager, my predecessor and the ex-Dutch Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and Kuwait, HE Frans Potuyt,” she explains. “I expressed my keenness to take up the role as Honorary Consul, as it would be my first official position and role that I would have enabling me able to serve and assist the community whether it be with respect to Dutch nationals, Bahrainis or otherwise. The remit is practical and peoplecentred, spanning assistance for tourist and work related visas, new-borns, investments opportunity enquiries into Bahrain and vice versa. “We try from the consular office perspective to provide the best, most efficient service within our capacity bearing in mind we are guided strictly by procedural protocol and in guidance with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kuwait.” The honour of public trust is not lost on her either. “I feel honoured that His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has granted me a second term as Honorary Dutch Consul to the Kingdom,” she says proudly. Bridging Kingdoms Two Bahrain’s Honorary Consul of the Netherlands, Zeenat Abdulhusain Dawani, discusses service, family balance and partnerships between the two countries, drawing on a bicultural upbringing and a pragmatic approach to community support today.
bahrainthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 INTERVIEW 9 Bicultural Roots Ms. Dawani’s compass is shaped by home as much as by chancery. With a Dutch mother and a Bahraini father, she credits her bicultural upbringing for the perspective that underpins her bridge-building today: “This combination I believe has given me an extremely sound basis to understand cultural diversity whether it be Dutch, European or Arab culture and tradition.” That heritage translates into operational empathy, giving her a closeness in understanding, depth and flexibility in dealing with the broad spectrum of matters that she faces. When cases escalate, the office switches to an emergency footing. Ms. Dawani sets out a clear, methodical playbook for urgent consular situations: “We work on the case immediately, in the best way possible in guidance with the relevant Dutch or Bahraini authorities. Often that includes family liaison across borders.” Defining Leadership Ms. Dawani defines leadership as lived across two demanding arenas: public service and private enterprise. She manages Dawani Group Holding, with activities in property and real estate, trading services and industry, yet she has deliberately redesigned her schedule around her young family. “Generally speaking, I arrange most work related activities during the period of 7am-2:30pm, including any duties involving the consular office,” she says. “The remaining time of the day, I prefer to stay at home to be there for my children.” Having married later in life, she decided to cut back her work hours from the usual full day to half a day’s work. The balance is not always easy, especially when work has demanded longer work hours than usual, but her children, Khalil and Emad, are always her priority. The evenings are carefully guarded for rest, reflection and family rhythm: “Beyond the children going to bed after storytelling and general chat, this time is dedicated to rest, a daily walk and any social obligations my husband and I would want to attend.” It is a blueprint many working parents will recognise, anchored by intentional choices and an honest acceptance that not everything can be done at once. Partners in Progress On the economic horizon, Ms. Dawani sees a fertile agenda for Bahrain–Netherlands collaboration. She frames the Dutch economy as a strong trading hub and services centre for Europe and the world, powered by trade, manufacturing, logistics, high tech industries and agriculture. There is already a track record of Dutch companies in Bahrain with Boskalis and Ballast Nedam, and the King Fahad Causeway stands as an important example of Dutch influence on the region. Policy alignment is sharpening, too, with the Dutch Embassy to Kuwait and Bahrain focusing on development on various sectors such as water, energy and food. Crucially, she argues for innovation linkages, not just contracts. “Strengthening innovationdriven collaboration between the two Kingdoms by connecting Bahrain’s key economic sectors with Dutch innovation ecosystem, such as that Brainport Eindhoven, will be very much encouraged.” The model has worked elsewhere in the Gulf, with renewable energy, water technology, agrifood and smart industry cited as promising fields. Asked about mentorship and the next generation, Ms. Dawani’s asserts: “I can only but encourage everyone out there who is determined and wanting to succeed. It will entail hard work. “Leadership positions are earned by being positive, decisive, taking the right decisions at the right time, being highly assertive, a team player and a strong strategic planner.” Above all, she champions courage of aspiration: “Anything is possible, so following your dreams and inspirations should always be kept at the forefront.” “Anything is possible, so following your dreams and inspirations should always be kept at the forefront.” - Zeenat Abdulhusain Dawani

In this exclusive interview, Munara Kyialbek Kyzy shares how she built M&M Beauty Lounge into a growing network of Bahrain salons, while empowering other women to rise with her.

Kindness, motivation and the desire to grow are very important to me. We provide ongoing training and quality control, so we can improve together. Leadership to me is ensuring the women around me feel supported, capable and empowered. What are the challenges you face as a founder? “Running a beauty business has many moving parts — keeping up with trends, maintaining high standards across all branches, managing rising costs and finding the right products and staff. We must respond quickly to clients, ensure a smooth experience and analyse the market to stay on top. How do you balance building a business and family life? Balancing family and business isn’t easy, but my husband is my biggest supporter. His belief in me fuels the courage to grow M&M Beauty Lounge. Even with a big age difference, our minds align and we always work as a team. I’m lucky to have a partner in both life and business. How did your journey in beauty begin? My journey in the beauty industry began in 2017 with encouragement from my family. They motivated me to study and open my own salon one day and that’s where it all started. In the beginning, I worked as a beautician to gain experience and learn every detail. That knowledge still helps me today, from understanding the technical side of beauty work to recognising true skill in new employees. This journey has taught me to communicate, to listen and to lead with care. I’m growing as a person alongside my business and I’m grateful for it. What makes M&M Beauty Lounge a brand women trust? We have convenient locations and highly skilled specialists working in Russian techniques, along with a warm, welcoming team. We pay great attention to our clients’ experience. We’ve built a strong system over five years to ensure consistent results. New team members go through a clear, step-by-step onboarding process so every client receives the same high standards, no matter where they go. Additionally, we are committed to understanding our clients through feedback. We know which colours they prefer and which lash volumes and curls are most popular and we make sure we always have what they love.” What’s next for M&M Beauty Lounge? M&M Beauty Lounge has grown thanks to our commitment to quality and client experience. We’re just getting started. Our dream is to expand across the GCC. We’re excited to be opening our third branch in West Riffa. We can’t wait to welcome our happy future customers there. Finally, what message would you share with women pursuing their ambitions? Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Things won’t always go to plan, but that’s how you learn and grow. Always trust yourself — even if there are thousands of salons, no one else will be you. Stay true to your vision, keep learning and keep moving forward. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Things won’t always go to plan, but that’s how you learn and grow. womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 OPINION 17 In an age where nearly every teenager has access to the Internet, parents face the challenge of protecting their children from cyberbullying. This form of bullying can manifest in various ways, from hurtful messages to harassment on social media. It is crucial for parents to figure out how to support their children in navigating these digital waters. The Impact of Parenting Understanding the role parents play in the lives of children affected by cyberbullying, whether as victims or perpetrators, is vital in preventing harassment. Two key factors influence this dynamic: parental warmth and monitoring. Parental warmth refers to the affection and support that parents provide. Research consistently shows that when parents are warm and nurturing, negative behaviours in children decrease which subsequently lowers their involvement in cyberbullying. Moreover, children who feel supported are more likely to share their online experiences, helping them avoid risky situations. Conversely, parental monitoring encompasses the oversight parents have over their children’s online and offline behaviours. However, monitoring is not synonymous with strict control. In many cases, overly restrictive measures such as limiting access to specific websites prove inadequate. Instead, parents who engage in open discussions about online behaviour, clarifying what is acceptable and what is not, equip their children to handle online conflicts more effectively. The Digital Landscape Today’s youth spend an average of 7.5 hours per day engaged with technology. This reality underscores the need for parents to be aware of not only what their children are doing online but also the platforms they are using. Many parents express concern that they lack knowledge about social media, making it challenging to monitor their children’s activities. Studies indicate that parents often underestimate the time their children spend online and the nature of their interactions. For instance, while some may be familiar with email, they might be unaware of social networking sites where most cyberbullying occurs. Set Clear Guidelines: Establish what constitutes acceptable behaviour online. Remind your children to treat others kindly even in digital spaces. Be Involved: Participate in technology use with your children. Engage in conversations about social media and digital interactions to foster connection. Cultivate Empathy: Help your children understand that their words and actions on digital platforms can significantly impact others. Discuss the feelings associated with being bullied and the importance of confronting such behaviour. Stay Informed: Keep up with technological advancements and social media trends. This knowledge will enable you to communicate more effectively with your children and understand their experiences better. Supporting Children in the Online World In the digital age, parents play a crucial role in safeguarding their children from cyberbullying. By fostering warm relationships, maintaining open lines of communication and actively engaging with their children online, parents can create a supportive environment. Establishing a safe space for children to express their thoughts and seek guidance helps them navigate challenges and remain productive in their lives. Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst, Fifi Kiwan, highlights how parental warmth, communication and awareness can help protect children in today’s online world, offering guidance to support them through the challenges of cyberbullying with understanding and confidence. Keeping Your Child Safe Cyberbullying and Parenting: Strategies for Success To combat cyberbullying effectively, parents should focus on strengthening their relationships with their children. Here are some strategies to consider: Open Up: Encourage your children to share their online experiences. When children feel safe discussing their digital lives with you, they are more likely to seek your help during difficult times.
womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 INTERVIEW 18 Firstly, could you share a brief overview of your career path and what led you to take this position? When I first moved to Dubai in 2001, I was a 26-year-old with an entrepreneurial spirit and a big sense of curiosity. The region was buzzing with opportunity and I absolutely loved discovering all the amazing restaurants, spas and experiences around me. But at the same time, I noticed something missing – there wasn’t an easy or affordable way for people to enjoy these experiences more often. That’s really where the idea for the ENTERTAINER came from. I wanted to create something that empowered people to explore more of what they love – dining out, attractions and pampering – without worrying about the cost. It started as a simple book of ‘Buy One Get One Free’ offers and I still remember visiting restaurants and hotels to convince them to come on board. Many of those first partners took a chance on me and I’ll always be grateful for that early support. During her visit to Bahrain to mark the ENTERTAINER’s 25th anniversary, Donna Benton, founder and CEO of the lifestyle incentives company, shared her inspiring journey, her vision for the brand and her unwavering commitment to empowering others. ENTERTAINER Evolution The
womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 INTERVIEW 19 That feeling of giving people more value and joy is what has driven me for the past 25 years. I love making the unaffordable affordable while at the same time driving footfall to businesses to help build their brands. Looking back, the ENTERTAINER has evolved so much, from a printed book to a tech-driven app with over 2,500 offers in Bahrain alone for 2026. But at its core, the inspiration has always been the same: helping people do more of what they love, for less. Over the past 25 years, the ENTERTAINER has grown significantly. Looking back, what were the pivotal moments or decisions that shaped its success story? The first ‘big moment’ was signing my very first merchant, the Marriott in Dubai. It was a major milestone that gave me the confidence and determination that the ENTERTAINER was going to work. Next, was our decision to go digital in 2013. Moving from a printed book to a full-fledged app was a huge leap of faith, but it allowed us to personalise experiences, connect in real-time with users and expand our reach exponentially. And, of course, our regional expansions have been defining, expanding into Bahrain in 2006. This year, with ENTERTAINER Bahrain 2026, we’re delivering our most comprehensive product yet. As CEO, what challenges unique to being a woman in leadership have you encountered, and how did you navigate them? When I started out, being a woman in business, particularly in the Middle East, was often seen as unusual. I was frequently the only woman in the room. But honestly, I never let that intimidate me. I focused on my product, my customers and the results. Over time, people saw the value I was creating and respect naturally followed. Being a ‘woman in business’ has never been an issue; some may like to think so, but it isn’t. What I’ve learned is that leadership isn’t about gender, it’s about conviction. I’ve built the ENTERTAINER on resilience, integrity and innovation. I want other women to see that your gender doesn’t define your limits. In fact, it can be your strength. Being empathetic, intuitive and people-focused has been a huge advantage in understanding both customers and teams. With the company celebrating its 25th anniversary, are there any new, innovations you’re particularly excited about this year? We’ve also introduced exciting new technology, including our AI-powered assistant H.A.P.I, which helps users get the most out of their membership. And with our refreshed interface and personalised recommendations, the experience feels more tailored than ever before. How do you envision the ENTERTAINER evolving over the next 25 years, especially with the rapid shifts in technology and consumer behaviour? The next 25 years will be about personalisation and connection. We’re already using AI and data to better understand our users’ lifestyles and tailor offers that truly match their preferences, whether that’s a weekend spa day or a day of family fun. We’re also evolving beyond savings to become a holistic lifestyle companion, one that curates experiences, builds loyalty and helps people make smarter spending choices. Our vision is to continue innovating while staying true to what has always made the ENTERTAINER special: doing more of what you love for less. For young women aspiring to become successful entrepreneurs or CEOs, what habits or mindsets do you believe are most crucial? First and foremost: believe in your vision and yourself. When I launched the ENTERTAINER, plenty of people doubted the idea of a ‘discount book’, but I saw potential, and that belief has carried me through the toughest moments. Be resilient, be curious and stay adaptable. The world changes quickly and you have to be willing to evolve with it. Build relationships, seek mentors and learn from everyone around you. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take up space. You belong in every room you walk into. If you could give one key piece of advice to a woman about to launch her first business, what would it be, and why? Just start. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect as it never will be. When I began, I didn’t have a big team or deep pockets but I had passion and persistence. Those two things are far more powerful than perfection. Be ready to work hard, listen to your customers and adapt quickly. Everyone has dreams, but if you do nothing about them, that’s all they remain. You need to make things happen to turn your dreams into reality so take calculated risks and dive in! Every mistake is a lesson in disguise. And remember: success is built one decision, one partnership and one brave leap at a time. Scan to Watch

womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 HEALTH 22 Shifting the Narrative For many years, domestic violence in Bahrain remained largely hidden. Women suffering abuse often felt there was nowhere to turn. Today, the kingdom is making steady progress in protecting women, creating safe spaces, and cultivating a society where domestic abuse is given the weight it deserves. Understanding the Roots Domestic violence arises from complex factors, including traditional gender roles, economic pressures, and limited awareness about healthy relationships. In Bahrain, many women historically faced stigma if they spoke out or sought help. Over the last decade, however, education, public awareness campaigns, and community programmes have shifted perceptions. Seeking help is being increasingly recognised as a sign of strength rather than shame. Legal Reform and National Action A turning point came in 2015 with the introduction of the Protection from Domestic Violence Law. For the first time, domestic violence was clearly defined as a crime, providing victims with legal protection, access to shelters, and formal mechanisms for reporting abuse. The National Strategy for the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence, led by the Supreme Council for Women in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development, strengthened these efforts by establishing support systems, training law enforcement, and launching awareness campaigns. Survivors now have access to both legal and emotional support through government channels. A Changing Mindset There is still work to be done, but it is encouraging to see how domestic violence is veering away from being an unspoken subject. A growing number of schools, workplaces, and social platforms are prioritising the need for discussions about respect, consent, and equality. Campaigns such as Speak Up Bahrain encourage both women and men to participate in prevention and advocacy. Media coverage, educational workshops, and community programmes help challenge outdated stereotypes and promote safe, respectful relationships. Demanding A Safer Future Bahrain has made remarkable strides in addressing domestic violence, but there is still progress to be made. Reporting rates remain lower than ideal, partly due to lingering social stigma and limited awareness in some communities. Expanding outreach to reach women who may not initially seek help is an ongoing priority. Efforts to integrate education on healthy relationships, gender equality, and consent into schools and workplaces are growing but could reach even more young people. Strengthening coordination between government services and community organisations is another area where progress is being made. These steps aim to ensure that every woman has access to timely support, legal protection, and safe spaces when she needs them. The important point is that these are not barriers, but opportunities. Each initiative and campaign contributes to a culture where speaking out is seen as a strength, and support networks are stronger than ever. The momentum for change is real, and it continues to grow every year. A Hopeful Path Forward The story of domestic violence in Bahrain is no longer one of silence. The narrative is slowly, but surely, shifting to centre recognition, reform, and community action. Survivors are more empowered to seek help, and society is responding with resources, protection, and more awareness than ever before. While there is definitely progress to be made, it is important to acknowledge the tangible change that is evident. Laws are stronger, shelters are available, hotlines operate around the clock, and an increasing number of community organisations are becoming active partners in creating safe environments. For women affected by domestic violence, this means they no longer have to face their challenges alone. Bahrain’s journey shows that transformation is possible when legislation, community support, and cultural awareness move together. The country is building a future in which homes are places of safety and respect, and where survivors are supported and empowered to rebuild their lives. Where to Find Support Women in Bahrain have access to a growing network of government initiatives and community-based organisations that offer immediate help, counselling, legal assistance, and safe spaces. womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 OPINION 23 You are in a meeting and you know the answer or have a valuable contribution. Yet you pause. That hesitation says more than we realise. Many women carry an uncertainty about how confidence is acceptable. It is not that we doubt our ability, but that we have learned to measure how we show it. What Confidence Really Means The confidence gap is the space between how capable women are and how confident they feel allowed to appear. Women often underestimate their performance while men tend to overestimate theirs. This is not about talent or intelligence. It is about how we are raised and how society rewards qualities. From a young age many girls are encouraged to be thoughtful, kind and modest. These are beautiful traits, yet they can make it harder to claim our strengths without apology. True confidence is not loudness or pride. It is self-trust: the calm belief that your ideas are worth sharing and that your presence matters. Modesty and Misunderstood Strength In many places modesty is a cherished virtue, shaping how we dress, speak and interact. Yet somewhere along the way modesty began to merge with self-doubt. Humility is graceful, but when humility turns into hesitation, or when we shrink from recognition, it stops serving us. Confidence and modesty are not opposites. They can exist side by side. Quiet confidence is dignified. It does not need to shout to be felt. Why the Gap Persists The gap grows from countless messages: being praised for being helpful instead of capable, being told not to stand out, or seeing assertiveness in boys labelled as strength while in girls it is dismissed as bossiness. These lessons follow us into adult life. Many women downplay achievements, soften opinions, or preface suggestions with “I might be wrong, but…” It is not that women lack confidence. It is that the world often rewards them for keeping it quiet. Rethinking What Confidence Looks Like Confidence can be gentle, steady and kind. It is saying thank you when someone compliments your work instead of brushing it aside. The Confidence Gap We Don’t Talk About Rachel Radford is an expat teacher in Bahrain. Her column in Woman This Month dives into pivotal issues impacting women, reflecting her unique perspective and experiences. It is offering your opinion without waiting for permission. It is knowing your worth without proving it constantly. It grows when women model it for one another. When we see friends, colleagues and mentors owning their strengths with warmth and certainty, we learn that selfbelief can be graceful too. Closing the Gap Bridging the gap is not about changing who we are. It is about unlearning the idea that certainty must be hidden. We can teach our daughters and remind ourselves that self-assurance is not pride but a form of respect for effort and worth. Confidence can be quiet and sit comfortably with modesty. A Quiet Kind of Power It is the steady belief that you belong wherever you choose to be. We do not need to shout to be heard. Sometimes the most powerful voice in the room speaks calmly, without hesitation, and knows it deserves to be there.
womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 PARENTING 24 Ouiam El Hassani explores how understanding the role of protein alongside nurturing intuitive eating can help children develop a healthy lifelong relationship with food rooted in awareness balance and trust. The Intuitive Eating Secret The world of childhood nutrition can often feel like a dizzying mix of ‘must-haves’ and ‘mustnots.’ From the latest superfood trends to the constant pressure to optimise every meal, it’s easy for parents to slip into a mindset of food control rather than food education. However, two of the most powerful and important concepts in feeding children, understanding the critical role of protein and fostering a sense of intuitive eating, work beautifully together. By focusing on why our children need certain foods and then trusting how they eat them, we can cultivate lifelong habits of health and a genuinely positive relationship with food. For growing children, protein is not just a component of dinner; it’s the silent foundation of a focused and successful day. Our bodies break down protein into amino acids, which are the building blocks for nearly every cell, enzyme and hormone, but their true magic lies in their power to stabilise blood sugar levels. This stability prevents the steep peaks and crashes that often lead to the dreaded mid-morning slump, the after-school meltdown or the kind of mental fog that makes homework feel like a Martian language. When a child starts their day with a breakfast rich in easily accessible protein, think Greek yoghurt, eggs or cottage cheese, they are essentially providing their brain with a steady, slow-burning fuel source. This sustained energy is vital for concentration, memory retention and the kind of mental perseverance required to tackle challenging schoolwork, effectively providing a calming cognitive edge. Building Intuitive Eating Skills While we can confidently provide our children with protein-rich options, the crucial next step is teaching them how to respond to their own bodies. This is where the concept of intuitive eating shines. This evidence-based approach centres on developing a healthy relationship with food by respecting the body’s internal cues of hunger and fullness, moving away from external diets and rigid rules. For children, this means fostering a deep sense of self-trust around food. Instead of forcing them to “clean their plate” to prove they are finished or restricting certain items with anxiety-inducing labels, intuitive eating encourages parents to create a supportive environment where all foods fit and the child decides how much to eat. This gentle approach is, in fact, a powerful preventative measure against developing food obsession or disordered patterns later in life. When children learn that their body is a reliable guide, that hunger is a natural, non-panicked signal and fullness is a cue to pause, they are less likely to overeat out of deprivation or anxiety. They learn emotional management skills by understanding that food is primarily fuel, not a reward or a coping mechanism for boredom. Protein and Self-Trust The magic truly happens when we merge the nutritional goal (providing protein) with the relational goal (fostering intuition). The strategy is not about hiding protein or resorting to clever deception; it’s about making protein-rich foods readily available and serving them without pressure or fanfare. A parent’s role transforms from being a food policeman into a food provider and facilitator. For instance, instead of requiring, “You must eat two more bites of chicken for protein,” try offering a plate with a mix of options: some protein, some healthy fats, some carbohydrates and using language that encourages internal awareness: “That chicken is great fuel for your brain. How does your tummy feel? Are you still feeling hungry for it or are you ready to go play?” This subtle shift in language teaches our kids to tune into their internal cues, allowing them to use their critical-thinking skills to make choices that serve their bodies best. By consistently providing foods that satisfy and sustain, like protein, the child learns through experience that these choices make them feel better, stronger and more focused. This practical, nonjudgemental approach is the key to preventing the rigid thinking that can spiral into obsession. Ultimately, we are teaching them to value food not for its ‘goodness’ or ‘badness,’ but for its genuine ability to energise their minds and bodies for a day of learning and growth. Giving them the best building blocks while trusting them to guide the construction is the smartest way to ensure a lifetime of nourishing habits. Protein & Peace:
womanthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2025 NUTRITION 26 Stronger Immunity, Softer Season: Staying Well This Flu Wave Consultant, Lifestyle Nutritionist and Meal Planner, Dr. Tejender Kaur Sarna, more popularly known as Dr. Tejji, explains how conscious eating and simple daily habits can strengthen immunity and help families stay well during flu season. Many families are noticing sniffles, coughs and mild fevers circulating through schools and homes as cooler weather and closer indoor interactions invite seasonal flu. While warm soups and tissue boxes tend to make an annual appearance, this period also reminds us to care for our immune health more intentionally. Flu season does not always arrive with clear warning, yet how our bodies cope depends greatly on how we nourish them every day. Beyond medicine, rest and recovery, our habits, nutrition and emotional balance shape the strength of our immune response. The flu may be seasonal, but health is something we nurture year-round. Eating consciously, sleeping well and living mindfully together form a strong foundation of resilience. Healing Starts in the Kitchen A strong immune system grows over time, strengthened meal by meal. Thoughtful food choices help the body defend, repair and recover. Load up on vitamin C and colourful produce. Citrus fruits, kiwi, guava, bell peppers and leafy greens are rich in antioxidants that support white blood cell function and ease inflammation. Add zinc-rich foods. Zinc supports immune repair and resistance to infection. Include nuts, seeds, chickpeas or seafood daily. Focus on gut health. Nearly 70 percent of the immune system is centred in the gut. Support it with room temperature yoghurt, kefir, pickled vegetables and fermented foods. Hydrate mindfully. Cooler weather often means drinking less water. Herbal teas, warm broths and fruit-infused water maintain hydration and help flush toxins. Do not skip protein. Protein assists repair and recovery. Add lentils, eggs, lean poultry, tofu or beans to everyday meals. Use immune-supporting herbs and spices. Garlic, turmeric, cinnamon and black pepper have natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities, while also adding flavour. Lifestyle Habits That Strengthen Immunity Good nutrition works best when supported by balanced daily habits: Sleep well. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep. The immune system restores itself during rest. Stress less. Chronic stress lowers immunity. Breathing exercises, gentle walks and journalling help keep the mind calm and the body steady. Move daily. Stretching, walking or light exercise supports circulation and immune function, and improves mood. Stay hygienic. Wash hands regularly, cover coughs and stay home when unwell. Small actions protect both yourself and others. Quick Health Fixes for Ladies • Morning start: Do not skip breakfast. Simple options like yoghurt with fruit, oats or a banana with nut butter support steady energy. • Smart snacks: Keep nuts, roasted chickpeas or fruit handy to avoid processed snacks. • Stay hydrated: Carry water with natural flavour additions such as mint or lemon. • Mini resets: Take five minutes to breathe deeply or stretch to reduce stress hormones. • Warm comforts: Green tea or turmeric milk helps soothe inflammation and supports relaxation. • Gentle evening wind-down: Unplug before bed to encourage deeper sleep.
