74 March 2014 www.womanthismonth.com LIFESTYLE | wellbeing What’s your fitness plan? I play netball twice a week in a social league on Tuesdays, supplemented by a two-hour training session on Wednesdays. I like to start my week off in the gym, mixing it up between weights and cardio. Back in junior school, I was as fast as the boys, which was useful on a football pitch. Then, at secondary school, I was introduced to hockey, tennis, netball and swimming. I was awful at tennis. Swimming wasn’t worth the additional headache as blow-drying my hair is a one-hour workout in itself! So netball won. Why does it work? Spending time with likeminded individuals is amazing. You can’t help but bond over wins and losses. It’s so dynamic. In our match last week, we spent a good 10 minutes running into each other and injuring ourselves, in a non-contact sport! It was funny; it brought us closer. (I’ll be flying to Italy in May to attend the wedding of one of my teammates.) Also, you can be held accountable, in a netball squad. Your shortcomings, such as lack of fitness, affect nine other people. Extra tips? Variety! Variety! VARIETY! You have to keep your body guessing; otherwise it will reach a plateau and you won’t see any results. If you only do weights, do a cardio weight workout. You don’t have to stop doing what you enjoy; just do it differently every time! Workout song: Katy on a Mission by Katy B Quote to live by: Accept responsibility for your life. It is you who will get you where you want to go; no one else. Name: Yaa Osei-Asibey Age: 27 Profession: Executive Officer Speciality: Exercise classes! I do body combat three times a week and body conditioning twice a week. I supplement these with Zumba, dance fit, body balance and yoga. When I had my youngest child, I didn’t exercise very often. I think you should be at home enjoying your baby and breast-feeding, plus all the late nights are very tiring. Now that she has started school, I have more free time. I set myself regular, achievable goals, by upping the weights that I use and taking on different classes. Why does it work? Being in the gym is the time I get to spend for myself. The feeling after a class is its own reward! I don’t find it hard, I just really enjoy it. I’m just so much more energetic now and I do more with my children. Also, I’ve gone down several dress sizes, so I get to buy some new clothes (don’t tell my husband)! Extra tips? I am careful about what I am teaching my children. I lead by example. My eldest child is a teenager now. I don’t really want to make a big deal about what I eat in case she gets self-conscious. So the children eat the same as me. We might have some fish and salad or chicken and salad. They have bread and rice too. They don’t seem to notice that I don’t have much in the way of carbohydrates.
