Woman This Month - March 2014

www.womanthismonth.com 73 March 2014 Team Healthy Food Name: Stevie Kirk Age: 30 Profession: Director-Bamboo Naturally What’s your fitness plan? My lifestyle is about living as compassionately as possible; where I can I live organically. This includes the food I eat, but also all cosmetics I use and household products I own. I am a student of health science, majoring in nutritional medicine. I run an environmentally conscious soft-goods company called Bamboo Naturally. Even though my day-to-day life is hectic, I do my best to keep myself balanced with the right food, with plenty of relaxation and time out, which is exercise for the body and the mind. I eat ‘clean’, avoiding processed and refined products. My meals are loaded with fresh, whole and natural foods. I have a high-protein breakfast. This makes me feel fuller and curbs cravings. I then have high-protein snacks throughout the day to keep me going. I love a handful of nuts and my favourite is homemade organic hummus with veggie sticks. Why does it work? Dieting is not a sustainable form of weight loss, nor does it support healing or health. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing coffee, sodas and energy drinks and switching to organic foods, are about making a commitment to yourself. With these permanent changes, you naturally become healthier, happier and weight loss feels effortless. Extra tips? Forget the old ‘eat less to weigh less’ idea. A calorie-restricted diet leaves you hungry, grumpy and lethargic. It’s what you eat that makes the difference. Counting calories means nothing. It’s the type of calories you need to focus on. Replace coffee with herbal teas or homemade vitamin water to aid detoxification, weight loss and hydration. Improve your sleep hygiene by switching off the television and computers one hour before bed.
