96 July 2013 www.womanthismonth.com AMERICAN MISSION HOSPITAL Most people break their fast with a few dates in keeping with Prophet Mohammad’s traditions. Today we learn that in fact, starting your Iftar meal with three dates and milk is highly nutritious. “They are dense in calories and adequate in potassium,” explains Abigail David, dietician at American Mission Hospital. The expert goes on to stress the importance of refraining from sugary foods and fizzy drinks during the Holy Month as they can make fasting harder. To control hunger pangs and thirst during the hot summer weather, eating right during Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) is essential. “Remember to take plenty of fluids, especially water, and to consume complex carbohydrates like whole grain muesli, wheat flakes and brown bread. This prolongs your energy levels for the rest of the day,” says the dietician. Consuming meals high in carbs, sugary drinks and desserts can result in what is known as a ‘sugar crash’, where energy levels rise up quickly and go down even quicker. To avoid this, have unrefined carbohydrates that help sustain the body’s energy for a longer span. Lean meat, egg, milk and dairy products like yoghurt not only serve as excellent sources of protein but also help to sustain from sugar cravings. Abigail points out that a high calorie dense meal after Iftar, restraining from regular exercise and not having enough sleep are the most common mistakes people make during Ramadan. “Given this year’s high temperatures, it is even more important for adequate intake of water. Men need at least 13 cups and women around nine. This can be taken between sunset and dawn,” she concludes. Call 17 248-110.
