www.womanthismonth.com 99 July 2013 BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL Conditions caused by recreational water activities may often be overlooked, but it’s vital for parents and caregivers to be aware of basic facts. WTM sat down with Dr Jofrelyn Bistoyong, paediatrician at Bahrain Specialist Hospital to learn more about the dangers that summer could bring. Recreational water illnesses (RWI) are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs or any body of water. “The most common of these diseases is diarrhoea brought about by swallowing water that has been contaminated with faeces containing germs. Others are skin infections like ‘hot tub rash’ spread through hot tubs and spas,” Dr Jofrelyn explains. The expert goes on to explain that respiratory illnesses are associated with the use of improperly maintained hot tubs as well, since high water temperatures make it hard to maintain the disinfectant levels needed to kill germs. Although chlorine kills them that cause RWI, the time it takes for each germ varies. Children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems can suffer from severe illness if infected. “To help prevent RWI, parents need to take a number of measures. One is to make sure your child doesn’t go into a public swimming pool if he/she already has diarrhoea. Other preventive measures are avoiding swallowing pool water, washing hands with soap after using the bathroom and changing diapers,” she says. “During recreational summer activities, give your child a bathroom break every hour. Check their diapers every 30 to 60 minutes. Call 17 812-000. The season of warmer weather is fast setting in. With this comes more opportunities for fun water-related activities, thus more exposure to recreational water illnesses.
