6 February 2014 www.womanthismonth.com letters Inspired to change The women featured in Woman This Month are always so inspiring. I have never considered a career in the Navy. The truth is I made this decision without even doing any research on how hard it is going to be. After reading your story on Eleanor Stack, I was forced to wonder why I did not consider something daring or even dare to pursue what my true ambition was — to fly! I’ve always given myself reasons for not following up with things or taking risks. I have been so busy convincing myself that I can’t do things that I turned 34 without amounting to much, at least not even as much as I am capable of. As I went on to read Raha’s story, I was sure that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. I hate to admit that my negativity is the only reason that I am stuck in a job that I don’t enjoy and continue to go to. And I am the only one at fault for being unhappy with myself. I want to believe that I will bring change into my life. But old habits die hard. Thankfully, I have a great support system. I’ve started making a list of what I need to finish by the end of 2014 and what I should have accomplished five years from now. I need to tell myself every day that age has nothing to do with accomplishments. I want to thank you for opening my eyes. I hope to write to you when I have scratched off everything I’ve planned for 2014. Wish me luck! Laila WRITE IN AND WIN Next month’s star letter will win a voucher for two from Joz Salon & Spa. I’m a self-proclaimed bookworm. It disappoints me that kids of today are screenobsessed. They’re either watching TV or staring at a computer or swiping away on a smartphone. If a child doesn’t catch her mom or dad nose deep in a book once in a while, he or she is not even going to try. I started reading when I got to college and I regret not having started sooner. Schools should take the initiative to get their students into the habit of reading. I just wrote to thank you for your feature on the need to read. I only found out about it because my friend dragged me along to pick some books for her daughter after she read the article. I’m glad she sees the importance of reading now. Eleanor Stack (ES): Around the age of 14, I’d gone on a school trip to the Glasgow shipyard. My hometown has a great tradition of ship building and what I saw on my visit seemed quite challenging. Besides, I’d always had a close affinity to the sea. I spent my childhood swimming off the Scottish Islands, sailing with my father and fishing with my family. The boys’ section is focused on more aggressive looks with the biker line; the all-over print of city skylines and the electric guitar; inlaid, shaded or printed on clothes. 14 February 2014 www.womanthismonth.com Ready for Summer FASHION | fashion forward The calendar might say it's winter time, but the fashion industry has already tuned into summer. Here are our top six picks that are the wardrobe must-haves of the next season. Boyish Contour A new silhouette will be explored with the waist being dropped a little, reviving a vintage concept. Mini tight dresses and long flowing options take the waistline to the hips. This cut not only elongates your top half, but also hides any undesirable lumps in the area. This colour blocking piece from Tommy Hilfiger gives a sporty vibe. Easygoing Walker Pool slides are next season’s favourite footwear. Chloe introduced the style in its new collection; it seems the trend has spread to other brands. The slippers replace traditional flip-flops and add oomph to your laid-back style. The comfy shoes work equally well with a flowing dress and relaxed shorts. Ethnic Prints The tribal vibe, popular in spring and summer collections, is very specific in the next season. It is represented by Aztec patterns. The clutch by M&Co, a combination of beads and threads in the colourful style, can be the cheerful element in a monochrome look. Dungarees, please! House of Fraser and many others are adding this iconic workwear to its spring and summer collections. The overall represents a young crowd with a free spirit. Fashion lovers may take offense for the return of this style. However, now that the option is here, turn it into something glam is a risk that all stylish girls would love to take.

The versatility is another highlight. You can wear to a casual get-together or, when paired with high heels and a suit jacket, to a business meeting. The girly look became simpler when paired with neutral flat sandals that highlights her natural beauty. The geometrical orange clutch that complements the stripes on the ruffled skirt adds the final touch to her look. Amy Adams For the LA premiere of American Hustle, Amy picked a David Koma black and white striped pencil dress. The designer transforms the simple mini-dress into a modern red carpet outfit with the sheer hem which adds length to the frock. Three fashion styles reigned this month: stripes, lace and laser cut! Which celebrity best dressed the contemporary trends?

www.womanthismonth.com 17 February 2014 Evangeline Lilly For the premiere of the movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in LA, the actor chose a laser cut leather and silk gown from Catherine Deane and teamed it with Brian Atwood shoes. The princess look finds its modernity in the blend of two starkly different types of fabrics. Ahna O’Reilly While in New York for the launch event of Stella Artois Crystal Chalice, Ahna opted for Tory Burch head to toe. The golden dress contrasts with the material under the laser cut for an oomph effect. The accessories represent the designer’s Victorian inspiration resulting in a ‘modern vintage’ look. Bar Refaeli The model impressed onlookers wearing an all-white lace ensemble from Michael Kors at the designer’s store opening in Milan. While the top and trousers might be a safe choice, the boldness lies in the fabric. Sometimes, a dress can be replaced by a casual and traditional concept, provided the material stands out.

The one-piece outfit, which has found its way back into the fashion scene, suits most body types. Opt for ones that boast different shades on the top and bottom, or for those with a pattern on either half. These are more fun and give the impression of a two-piece ensemble. Singlecoloured jumpsuits work as a long dress, which is ideal if you want to stretch your figure. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Contour

www.womanthismonth.com 19 February 2014 Embellished Skirt This reliable piece is a perennial item in every woman’s wardrobe. The difference is in the cut. The mid-calf option with zero details is like a white canvas that gives you infinite possibilities, where the accessories define the style. For a contemporary look, add a striking collar. A belt along the waist creates an hourglass silhouette. Black wedges and pink clutch finalise this classic concept. A black skirt gets the perfect evening twist with bits of glitter. While knee-length works for all ages, a mini-skirt is better for younger legs. Make sure your choice of top is minimal with not more than one or two shades; avoid coloured patterns. To show off your trendy side, add pastel pink to your accessories. This look represents the modern woman. Unlike what most people think, they do go well with short skirts and lightweight floral dresses. Consider getting them in black and brown to maximise your options. Slight Elevation Kitten heels are mostly meant for tall women who want to add to their charm without calling too much attention. This ultrafeminine style works great with office wear. Thanks to its subtle design, you can try different colours and patterns to spice up the look. Fresh and Free Sandals are to summer what boots are to winter. Some girls can pull off the ‘socks plus straps’ style, although they are very rare. The best choice is to keep them aside for warmer days. Girly dresses and flowing trousers are great companions for this concept. Avoid wearing them with coats or jumpers. Simply Stylish Espadrilles sum up the relaxed, chilled-out style. Comfortable and chic, they are the best pick for a French Riviera vibe. Don your nautical shorts or flowing dress and enjoy the sun. A Panama hat complements the laid-back flair. 28 February 2014 www.womanthismonth.com Dentist-turned-entrepreneur Pragati Sawhney brews chocolate that’s healthy for your teeth. She was inspired to create a socially conscious business during a semester course in Social Entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School while pursuing her Master’s degree. On her return from the US in 2011, she founded Chockriti, a boutique chocolate house in Delhi. Pragati explains the ethos behind her creations. Woman This Month: Did you have formal training as a chocolatier? Pragati Sawhney (PS): I learnt through chocolate tasting tours during travel in Germany, New York and California and did hands workshops at the International Culinary Institute, NY and at Barry Callebaut (glass desserts). WTM: From a nutritional aspect, chocolate is perceived as sinful and the first thing to avoid if you want to lose weight. What’s your take on this? PS: Natural dark chocolate with over 60 percent cocoa is low in sugar and contains more age-defying antioxidants than goji, acai and other berries. Dark chocolate has the second highest concentration of anti-oxidant rich resveratrol, next to red wine. Flavonoids in dark chocolate regulate blood pressure. Epicatechin is found to reduce heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Pure dark chocolate was found to delay formation of plaque on the teeth, so it actually helps in the prevention of cavities. I use high quality European couvertures with 56-71 percent cacao. Except for a teaspoon of cream for the fillings, no butter, sugar or corn syrup is added. However, ‘compound chocolate’ that’s made with cocoa powder, milk powder and sugar has no real nutritional benefit. So, please check labels before buying! WTM: Some of your flavours such as Shiitake Nori and Wasabi seem quirky. How do your clients respond to these? PS: My clients are people who enjoy world cuisine. In India, people who’re well travelled or foodies use ingredients like wasabi and Kaffir lime at home. Unconventional flavours are getting a good response. Recently, at an event at Westin Hotel, a lady bought a whole box of the Zaatar Spice Truffles. WTM: What’s the social angle to your venture? PS: I wanted to help less privileged women so they could feel empowered to face their challenges. I found a local NGO which was looking to place its vocational training graduates. I took some women on board and trained them with fair wages. They’ve been working with me for almost a year. WTM: Tell us about your Bahrain connection. To what extent do you cater to the Arab palate? PS: I grew up in Bahrain and later worked there as dental faculty at College of Health Sciences. Arabic herbs and spices inspired me to create flavours such as Orange Blossom, Kahwa, Moroccan Mint, Date Rose and Hibiscus. I’ve tied up with a courier service for delivery in the Middle East within 72 hours. Given the local weather, we pack chocolates in ice gels so they stay cool during the transit. Visit www.chockriti.com. Most dentists will tell you to cut down on chocolates, but Pragati Sawhney is of a different tribe. Crafting Worlds of Flavour people | interview by SIMI KAMBOJ

30 February 2014 www.womanthismonth.com Bahrain’s R&B singer and actress Miraya Varma is far from new in the entertainment business. Miraya began modelling when she was 14 and remained in the spotlight until she moved to the UK as a 19-year-old student. Last year, she marked her comeback with the Bahraini production Dead Sands, where her character ‘Samara’ was praised by critics. Miraya also released her first R&B single last year and bagged the JJ’s Karaoke Idol competition in December. She’ll soon get busy again with a sequel to Dead Sands. With offers from the South Indian film industry in hand, Miraya maintains that music is her first love. Woman This Month (WTM): Tell us about the latest on the work front. Miraya Verma (MV): I’m excited about some overseas developments, but I can't give details at this point. I’m working with a British producer and an international celebrity for a music video that’ll be shot in Bahrain this year. I also have an IndianArabic music video set to release this year. WTM: What’s been your greatest challenge? MV: Staying away from something that I love most — the stage. My parents wanted me to get professional degrees. I was away for five years, studying in the UK where I nearly gave up on myself. I had gained weight and didn’t care for my appearance or voice. Last year, when I decided to make a comeback, I shed 21 kilos in six months. I’ve done over a 100 photoshoots for fashion and make-up since then. WTM: Who has been your greatest personal inspiration? MV: My mother is an accomplished singer and danseuse. She’s immensely talented and I’ve admired her since early childhood. It was she who got me out of my non-caring phase. She told me: ‘Your talent is what God gave you, but what you do with it is your gift to God.’ That really stayed with me. WTM: If there’s something you could change about Bahrain’s entertainment scene, what would it be? MV: Entertainers in Bahrain need a lot of support to make their mark internationally. This involves financial backing as well as media exposure. For instance, the music video I was doing required a lot of support and it's been a struggle for me to get that. It would be nice if someone took interest, appreciated and encouraged young talent, so that we can show the world what we're made of. WTM: What's your greatest ambition? MV: I love singing and want to make my mark in music. The only reason I got into the world of modelling and movies is because I want to be noticed as a singer. Music really defines me. I want to be singing even when I’m 70! After a self-imposed exile of six years, Bahrain-based singer and actress Miraya Varma is back with her goals set in show business. www.womanthismonth.com February 2014 34 BEAUTY | review In the quest to achieve perfect skin, most women spend their precious time pampering their face and body; often neglecting an important area — the neck! What women don’t know and tend to forget is that the skin on your neck is really thin and more susceptible to damage. This means that it will wrinkle easily and give away your age, just like your hands do. Weak muscles magnify the flaws of loose skin. Although they may seem odd, practise neck exercises for a good-looking nape. Considering how much you stretch your skin when you move your neck and how exposed it is to pollution and harmful sunrays, you should certainly be paying more attention to it. Do you cleanse your neck as much as often as your face? Do you protect your neck with sunscreen? Here’s how you can begin to embrace V-necks! Special attention For a younger-looking neck, include it in your cleansing and moisturising routine, at least twice a day. During cold and dry weather, apply a smoother product to protect the skin. If your facial cream is meant for oily skin and you prefer a light-weight lotion, get a separate formula for your neck. This area has fewer oil glands and needs more hydration than your face. Anti-ageing products are recommended to avoid lines. Pick a product that delivers moisture; use it daily. Regular skin exfoliation is another way to fight undesirable lines. It also helps the development of new collagen, resulting in a healthier-looking skin. Homogeneous skin Too much exposure to UV rays stimulates pigment-producing cells, causing sun spots. Unfortunately this happens on the delicate neck area as well. To brighten it, use bleaching creams that contain acids or liquorice extracts as they lighten dark blotches. Results may take some time to appear. You need to be careful when you apply these products. The neck is drier and more sensitive; and thus can get irritated easily. The best way to achieve your goal is to consult a dermatologist. Wearing a broad-spectrum sunblock daily and not only when you go sun bathing helps in preventing skin damage. Don’t forget to include the exposed area of the chest as well. The time is now Laser, liposuction and surgery are a last resort if you’ve not found results after trying various creams and non-invasive aesthetic procedures. The best way to fight the ageing process is to prevent it. Thinking about the future of your skin helps you give it a little bit of attention now — when it really matters. The cosmetic industry has developed many products and home treatments that allow you to achieve healthy skin easily. This kind of care goes beyond vanity; you will thank your younger self later. by Fernanda Langhammer Goodbye Turtlenecks!

www.womanthismonth.com 35 February 2014 Tried and Tested Until recently, I was confident that I didn’t need a specific product for my neck. I used to rely on my regular facial cream; that is when I would remember to apply it on my neck as well. Did I really need another product in my beauty cabinet? Was it worth carrying around the extra weight on my frequent travels? As a beauty product hunter, I had to find out! So I chose to try out Clarins’ Extra-Firming Neck Lotion. The fact that I had a product to apply exclusively on the neck itself reminded me about this area that needs just as much care as the rest of my body. The daily cleansing and moisturising routine of my neck was kept in check thanks to this new lotion. Another feature that made a big difference was the texture. This product does not leave the inevitable sticky feeling that regular facial creams do. It was due to this uncomfortable factor that I used to only apply the cream that was left over on my fingertips on my neck. The soft texture and quick absorption of the lotion are great features. After applying it for three weeks, my skin definitely looked better and was radiant. It has a velvety touch and it looks like the skin has slightly lifted. I’m very pleased with the results and yes, I’ve gladly added this new product to my beauty routine! What: Clarins Extra-Firming Neck Lotion How often: Twice a day Aim: To restore and even the skin on the neck Favourite feature: The texture! The quick absorption leaves the skin soft and smooth. 36 February 2014 www.womanthismonth.com Your Questions Answered BEAUTY | advice Q: Spring and summer collections are arriving in stores. What are the winter pieces that are still worth the buy? A: If you think racks of winter collections at good prices may cross your path, make a list of items that will remain in trend in the next season. Forget thick coats; embrace thin jackets. Consider denim, biker and bomber options, especially in prints and solid colours. Mid-skirts and mid-dresses are also a good choice. They will continue to be in style; pick the ones in lighter fabrics. And last, but not least, add a jumpsuit to your wardrobe. Wear it with highheeled sandals in summer. Beyonce Stradivarius Our fashion and beauty editor will answer all your queries every month. Write to her at [email protected] for more tips and tricks. Q: How can I avoid the clumps in my lashes? A: Even the most amazing brands and after all the technology invested in the beauty industry, the key to better results rely upon the application. There are many different wands on the market; pick one that you feel most comfortable with. As a final touch, use a clean wand to comb the lashes before they dry. The brushing doesn’t take the product out; instead it simply removes annoying clumps. You also get rid of excess mascara, giving you full, outstanding lashes. Q: Is there a trick to braiding hair better? A: There are several video tutorials that unveil the tricks of specific hairstyles. However some general tips may be useful. The easier way to braid your hair is when it is damp or wet. Add a little bit of spray to rebellious hair while wet to hold them in the right place. Pick easier techniques if you are a beginner. It is simpler to do ones that are on one side, like a fishtail, rather than doing a French braid straight down the neck. Don’t forget; the tighter the braid, the longer it will last. Q: How can you use make-up to emphasise or reduce face features? A: Make-up can help you with light illusion. The first rule is that dark shades recede, while light pigments highlight. Use a matte bronzer two tones darker when looking to diminish; choose a luminous highlighter for the opposite effect. For a thinner nose, apply the bronzer on the sides. Stop when you reach the nostrils and blend the luminous powder along the bridge of your nose. You can downplay the width of your face by applying highlighter in the centre of it. Start between the brows and follow down the bridge of the nose, Cupid’s bow above your lips and centre of the chin. You’ll love the effect!

38 February 2014 www.womanthismonth.com BEAUTY | 5 tips The best time to treat your skin is while you’re asleep. Here are the tricks to waking up beautiful. Pleasant Complexion Dark spots and blemishes can be diminished while you sleep. Some brands offer night creams that help brighten the skin, even your complexion and reduce discolouration. Most skin problems can be solved by applying trusted creams using your fingertips. 2. Night Repair 4. 1. Walking on Clouds Your feet are always holding you up during the day, taking you from one place to another and carrying all your weight. So treat them while they rest at bedtime. Find your favourite lotion, preferably ones that can heal cracks. Apply it gently avoiding the space between the toes. For better results, put on some socks and enjoy velvety soft skin after this night spa regime. Getting Younger Anti-ageing products are gaining popularity and come in ‘day’ and ‘night’ sets. Technology has created specific formulas meant to be applied at night. Made with elements that can’t be exposed to sun rays, these are stronger and deliver the best results. The perfect brand is one that makes your skin feel moisturised comfortable. Estee Lauder Healthy Strands Your hair is exposed to harmful elements, such as sun rays and pollution. Several cosmetic brands have extended their range with haircare products. Repair oils applied to the ends of your hair overnight will certainly deliver better results than when used during the day. 3. 5. Deep Sleep Everyone knows that a good night’s sleep is essential for a healthy complexion. All women look forward to beauty sleep, but dreamland doesn’t always come so easily. Certain oils and teas can help you fall asleep and recover from a tiring day. Give it a shot.
