Looking back at all that has culminated throughout 2024 is a feeling that can’t quite be put into words. 2024 is not only the year that Woman This Month has made a spectacular comeback, but the year that we have had the privilege of launching the Woman of the Year Awards. In the months that have passed, the WTM team has had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing hundreds of incredible women across several sectors – each an inspiration in her own right. Women, often unknowingly, have a profound impact on all those around them. It starts with our mothers who shower us with unconditional love, constant guidance and encouragement to help us be the very best version of ourselves. Women take on several roles through our lives, be it a sister, wife, teacher, boss, community leader or a willing listener. In all these roles, there are some things that remain constant – they are able leaders and approach each role with determination and alacrity. I can say with confidence that the Woman of the Year Awards is a crucial initiative to recognise all that women have achieved, what they continue to do and their vision for the future. In this edition, you will discover the 19 recipients of the Woman of the Year Awards 2024 whose stories we will have the pleasure of telling throughout 2025. Speaking of incredible women, there are several inspirational interviews in this exciting December edition. We spoke to the visionary Tamkeen CE, HE Maha Mofeez, about its initiatives to ensure the private sector is the backbone of Bahrain’s economy. You may also read about the trailblazing, award-winning journalist and broadcaster, Baria Alamuddin, who was the chief guest at this year’s awards. You’ll also read about an inspiring consultant therapist, Dr. Siddiqa Hussain Al Meer, who has devoted her career to improving the emotional and psychological well-being of young people and their families in Bahrain. Sharing her incredible entrepreneurial legacy is Moon Top Shop/Flormar Managing Director, Majeda Akhtarzadeh – a renowned businesswoman in Bahrain. Creativity presents itself in all forms with Lumineoux Interiors – Design Director and Founder, Manal Bukamal, Pom Pom Boutique’s owner, Fatema Habib, ESMOD CEO, Tamara Hostal and Bahar Jewellers Founder, Harshad S. 10 December 2024 WHITE MAN’S WIFE IS HERE! Dear readers, the event marking the launch of my latest book, White Man’s Wife, was a great success! The event was held on November 11 at Lanterns Lounge & Restaurant and was graced by the Ambassador of France to Bahrain, HE Eric Giraud-Telme, HE’s wife, Mrs Amelie GiraudTelme, UNIDO Director, Dr. Hashim Hussein, Capital Governorate Director of Information & Follow-up, Yusuf Lori, representatives from the Ethiopian consulate, the book’s editor Kristian Harrison and the ‘White Man’ himself, my husband Pierric Dubois. Grab your Kindle copy on Amazon now. In the meantime, enjoy this excerpt: the foreword by publisher George F. Middleton. It is an honour to introduce White Man’s Wife, a compelling and deeply personal work by Eskedar Girmay Dubois, an accomplished Ethiopian writer, film producer and actress. In this book, Eskedar courageously addresses the complex stereotypes and societal judgments faced by Ethiopian women married to foreigners, while also exploring broader issues of gender and national identity. Eskedar’s narrative sheds light on the unique discrimination these women face. Often labeled as Yeferenji Mist – a term loaded with negative connotations – they are viewed through a lens of dependency on their foreign husbands rather than being acknowledged for their own strength and achievements. Society frequently dismisses their successes, attributing them to their marriages rather than recognising their personal efforts and resilience. A central theme in White Man’s Wife is the struggle for acceptance within their own communities. These women are often marginalised, with their choices questioned and their love and partnerships viewed with scepticism. Eskedar illustrates the painful reality of returning home, where these women, despite maintaining a strong connection to their Ethiopian roots, are sometimes treated as outsiders. Through her vivid storytelling and personal reflections, Eskedar calls for empathy and understanding. She challenges readers to reconsider harmful stereotypes and to recognise the diverse identities of Ethiopian women. Her book is a powerful reminder that all women, regardless of their marital status or the nationality of their partners, deserve to be seen, heard and respected for who they are and what they contribute. White Man’s Wife is not just a memoir; it is a courageous exploration of identity, love and the quest for dignity in the face of adversity. Eskedar has given a voice to those who have been marginalised, creating a work that is both timely and timeless. This book invites us to engage in a necessary conversation about how we view and treat one another, both within and across cultural boundaries. I have known Esky, her European husband and incredible son and daughter for the past 25 years and I have been amazed at her persistence, perseverance and passion in everything she has been involved in during this period. Despite her privileged position, she dedicated herself to philanthropy and supporting those less fortunate; on many occasions being called to police stations at odd hours of the day or night in order to intercede on behalf of Ethiopian nationals who had been abused or mistreated by their employers. As you read this remarkable book, I hope you will be moved by Eskedar’s honesty, inspired by her resilience and challenged to think differently about the world around you. White Man’s Wife is not just a story about Ethiopian women; it is a story about all of us, about the choices we make, the judgments we cast and the humanity we share. DRIVING ECONOMIC PROSPERITY Since its establishment in 2006, Tamkeen has stood as the symbol of economic empowerment in Bahrain, contributing to the Kingdom’s growth by upskilling local talent and supporting businesses. Led by its visionary CE, Her Excellency Ms. Maha Mofeez, Tamkeen continues to drive initiatives that ensure the private sector thrives as the backbone of Bahrain’s economy, adapting to global and local economic shifts with a forwardthinking approach. She shares her thoughts with Woman This Month. PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 26 December 2024

December 2024 27 PEOPLE | interview “Our mission has always been to empower Bahraini talent and enable the private sector to be the key economic driver in the Kingdom,” says Ms. Mofeez. Tamkeen’s programmes are designed to help individuals and enterprises reach their highest potential. This involves a meticulous process of tailoring initiatives based on market feedback, industry insights and robust data analytics to remain relevant in an everchanging world. Adapting to a Digital Future In a global economy where technology is transforming industries at an unprecedented pace, Tamkeen has made tech sector development a top priority. “Technology is transforming economies worldwide,” Ms. Mofeez asserts. “We have focused on enabling enterprises to adopt innovative technologies and digitally transform, while also reskilling and upskilling Bahrainis in high-demand tech specialisations.” Tamkeen’s initiatives in this domain include supporting tech-focused training programmes and fostering a pool of professionals capable of leading digital transformation. This dual approach not only enhances the competitiveness of Bahraini businesses but also ensures that the Kingdom has a robust talent pipeline equipped for the demands of the future. Complementing this strategy is Skills Bahrain, an initiative established to bridge the skills gap in the labour market. “Skills Bahrain works closely with employers, education providers and government stakeholders to ensure our workforce transitions seamlessly from education to employment,” says Ms. Mofeez. To date, nine sector-specific skills reports have been published, offering critical insights into the evolving needs of Bahrain’s economy. Data-Driven Decision Making Tamkeen’s commitment to impactful and measurable outcomes is evident in its reliance on data. “Our data analytics department continuously measures the outcomes of our support, enhancing our ability to track market impact and make informed decisions,” Ms. Mofeez explains. This approach ensures that resources are utilised efficiently and that the organisation remains agile in responding to the needs of Bahrain’s economy. Since its inception, Tamkeen has supported more than 188,000 individuals and 82,000 enterprises, investing BD2.4 billion to bolster the Kingdom’s economic resilience. This extensive reach underlines Tamkeen’s integral role in shaping Bahrain’s economic landscape, particularly through empowering women and Bahrain’s workforce. Empowering Bahraini Women Aligned with Bahrain’s vision under the leadership of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the Consort of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), empowering Bahraini women has been a cornerstone of Tamkeen’s strategy. The Labour Fund has consistently championed initiatives aimed at integrating women into the labour market, enhancing their skills and supporting their entrepreneurial ambitions. “Empowering Bahraini women has always been a priority for us,” Ms. Mofeez states. Since 2006, Tamkeen has trained over 92,600 women, supported more than 15,800 female-led enterprises, and enabled the establishment of 7,100 startups. These achievements reflect Tamkeen’s dedication to fostering gender inclusivity in the workforce. One of Tamkeen’s standout initiatives is the Riyadat Programme, developed in partnership with the Bahrain Development Bank. This programme addresses one of the most significant challenges faced by female entrepreneurs: access to funding. “The initiative provides subsidised loans to help women launch and grow their businesses,” says Ms. Mofeez. This has been instrumental in increasing the number of women-led enterprises in Bahrain, paving the way for their active participation in the economy. Ms. Mofeez celebrates the success of Bahraini women, noting their contributions to the Kingdom’s progress. “Today, Bahraini women are board members, CEOs, business owners and executive leaders. Their remarkable capabilities are integral to national economic development,” she says proudly. A Vision for Sustainable Growth Tamkeen’s efforts extend beyond immediate economic benefits to ensuring long-term sustainability for Bahrain’s workforce and businesses. Collaborations with key public and private stakeholders enable the organisation to continuously evolve its programmes, ensuring alignment with Bahrain’s economic goals. From supporting digital transformation to empowering women, Tamkeen has cemented its role as a key enabler of economic progress in Bahrain. “Our journey is ongoing, and we remain committed to creating opportunities that drive sustainable growth and prosperity for all,” Ms. Mofeez affirms. What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism? My journey into journalism was deeply influenced by my upbringing and my mother’s values. She instilled in me ideals of freedom, justice and education from a young age. I initially considered a career in law, thinking it would be my path to contribute to justice, but the opportunities for women in Lebanon at that time were limited. Journalism offered an alternative way to advocate for truth and social change. I decided to study mass communication and political science, which gave me a strong foundation in understanding the world around me. Early in my career, I focused on women’s issues, but as I gained experience, I discovered my passion for politics and interviews. My curiosity and love for storytelling made journalism feel less like a job and more like a calling. As a Middle Eastern woman in journalism, what challenges did you face in the early part of your career? When I began, journalism was a maledominated field, as were many academic fields which were deemed unsuitable for women. There were societal expectations that I needed to navigate, even from within my own family, but I was determined to prove that women could excel in any field. I also faced professional challenges and deadlines, such as working in high-pressure environments, taking late-night assignments and confronting tough political issues. However, as I gained experience, I began earning the respect of my colleagues, many of whom became my mentors. Lebanon, despite its challenges, has always been a hub for journalism in the Arab world. I was fortunate to study at the American University of Beirut, where I learned from some of the best minds in the field. You’ve interviewed some of the world’s most influential leaders. How have these interviews impacted you? Interviewing global leaders and activists has been an incredibly enriching experience, both personally and professionally. Some leaders left me with a bad impression, but others severely impacted me. One of the most memorable interviews I conducted was with Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, shortly before her assassination. Her humility and dedication to her country left a lasting impression on me and she taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of leadership and service. I’ve also interviewed other inspiring people in Bahrain and the Middle East including HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, his father Shaikh Isa, King Hussein of Jordan, and the famous poet Ghazi Al Gosaibi. How do you view the progress of women’s rights in the Middle East compared to 30 years ago? There has been undeniable progress, but it varies significantly by country. Gulf nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE have made strides in areas like education, workforce participation and leadership. Women in these Womanthismonth.com 28 December 2024 Baria Alamuddin is trailblazing, awardwinning journalist and broadcaster who has made an indelible mark on Middle Eastern and global media. Over her illustrious career, she has interviewed influential political and cultural leaders, championed women’s rights and advocated for social justice. Known for her sharp insights and fearless reporting, she has become a role model for women in journalism in a region where such achievements were once rare. A PIONEER OF WOMEN’S ADVOCACY PEOPLE | interview Media plays a crucial role in challenging societal norms and amplifying the voices of the marginalised.

Womanthismonth.com December 2024 29 PEOPLE | interview nations have become astronauts, entrepreneurs and political leaders transforming their societies in remarkable ways. However, other regions, like Afghanistan and Iran, have seen setbacks, with regimes actively suppressing women’s voices. It’s heart-breaking to witness these regressions, especially when women continue to fight courageously for their rights. My own mother, who was a passionate advocate for girls’ education, remains my inspiration. Her efforts to ensure girls had access to schooling, even in impoverished areas of Lebanon, taught me the importance of education in empowering women. Today, I see a new generation of Arab women breaking barriers, but the road ahead remains long. How did your mother’s advocacy for female education shape your views on women’s empowerment? My mother was a true pioneer. Although she passed away when I was young, her legacy has been a guiding force throughout my life. She worked tirelessly to promote girls’ education, even establishing schools in conflict-affected. Her belief that men and women are equal partners in society became central to my own advocacy. Growing up, I watched her urge families to send their daughters to school, even when it was uncommon. Her determination inspired me to continue her work, advocating for women’s rights through my journalism and other efforts. How do you see the role of media in shaping societal change, particularly in the context of gender equality? Media plays a crucial role in challenging societal norms and amplifying the voices of the marginalised. While state-controlled media in parts of the Middle East can limit progress, independent platforms and digital media offer new opportunities for change. Journalists have the power to expose injustices, tell true stories that inspire action, and advocate for equality. In the Arab world, we’ve seen women journalists cover conflict zones and societal issues with bravery and professionalism. However, the rise of misinformation is a growing challenge, threatening the integrity of journalism and hindering progress on critical issues like gender equality. As a mother, how did you encourage your children to pursue their own paths? I’ve always believed in letting my children follow their passions. I have four children –two daughters and two step-sons – and I encouraged each of them to leave a footprint that can bring change in the world and explore what truly made them happy. Amal and Tala, for instance, have pursued careers in law, academia, entrepreneurship and design, and I’m incredibly proud of all my children’s accomplishments. My emphasis has always been on values like hard work, integrity and compassion. These principles have guided my children in becoming the strong, independent individuals they are today. What role do you hope your work will play in inspiring future generations? I see journalism as a powerful tool for social change. My goal has always been to use my platform to raise awareness about critical issues like women’s rights, diversity, education and justice. I hope to continue sharing stories that inspire, mentoring aspiring journalists and writing books that reflect the lessons I’ve learned over the years. Ultimately, I want my work to encourage young people, especially women, to believe in themselves, fearlessly pursue their passions and contribute to building a more equitable world.

FINDING THE PERFECT HARMONY Managing motherhood, entrepreneurship and selfcare may seem like an insurmountable task, but for Nasra Grimley, it’s a delicate yet rewarding act. As a mother to three boys, a wife and the driving force behind Alkem Health and Wellness Centre, she tells Kristian Harrison how she discovered that creating harmony – not chasing perfection – is the key to thriving in all areas of her life. “I’ve stopped using the word ‘balance’ because it implies keeping everything equal, which is impossible,” she explains. “Instead, I focus on harmony, prioritising what matters most each day and what feels good in the moment. Some days work takes precedence, while others, my family or self-care comes first. This perspective allows me to be more present and fulfilled.” Nasra’s strategies for navigating her busy life include clear priorities, time blocking and outsourcing. “I allocate dedicated time for family and work. When I’m with my kids, I’m fully present, and when I’m working, I focus entirely on my business,” she shares. She also emphasises the importance of self-care as a foundation for everything. “When I’m at my best, I can give more to my family and work. Simple practices like a quiet morning, exercise or unwinding help me recharge.” For Nasra, family and business occasionally intersect, providing teaching moments for her boys. “I love involving my family in my work where I can. I share milestones and explain what I do in ways they can relate to. I hope it teaches them about resilience, adaptability and leading with kindness,” she says. “Success isn’t just about achievements; it’s about creating a fulfilling life aligned with your purpose.” Building Alkem while being a handson mum wasn’t without its challenges. “There were times I felt stretched thin, but I’ve learned to let go of perfection and focus on being present,” she reflects. “Delegating responsibilities and setting boundaries were essential for maintaining structure and protecting family time.” Alkem’s philosophy of holistic well-being also influences Nasra’s personal and family life. “We focus on addressing root causes, not just symptoms, and I apply this to our home life. Whether it’s identifying the source of stress or meeting each other’s emotional needs, it’s about creating a foundation of health and connection.” When it comes to recharging as a family, simplicity is key. “It’s about being present. We enjoy watching movies, cheering on the kids at football and sharing meals my husband prepares. These moments, though simple, are filled with love and connection,” she says. Her advice to mothers pursuing dreams while raising a family? “Let go of perfection and give yourself grace. Focus on your values, ask for help and protect your time and energy. Taking care of yourself allows you to show up fully. Life isn’t perfect, but embracing the journey with intention makes it meaningful.” PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 34 December 2024

Womanthismonth.com December 2024 35 PEOPLE | interview MAKING YOUR HEALTH A PRIORITY Having transformed Bahrain’s medical scene with its innovative approach to integrating traditional and modern medicine,Alkem Health and Wellness Centre continues to grow with the appointment of general practitioner, Dr.Alaa Al Jassas. In this interview with Woman This Month, she shares her passion for elevating women’s health, particularly with skincare and IV therapy. From an early age, Dr. Al Jassas knew that medicine was her calling. “I’ve always been fascinated by the human body and how medical science can enhance lives,” she says. “Women’s health became my focus because I’m driven to empower women to take charge of their well-being.” Her commitment to providing personalised, compassionate care makes her a strong advocate for women at all life stages. Dr. Al Jassas was attracted to Alkem, which is an NHRAlicensed medical centre in City Centre Bahrain, when she realised that its philosophy closely aligned with her own. “What drew me to Alkem was the opportunity to address more than just physical symptoms. Here, I can connect with patients on a deeper level, considering their physical, emotional and mental health,” she explains. “It’s rewarding to work with a team that values a holistic approach, which is essential for truly patient-centred care.” A significant part of her work involves IV therapy, a treatment growing in popularity for its rapid benefits. “IV therapy allows nutrients to be delivered directly into the bloodstream, promoting faster absorption and immediate effects. For women, this can mean boosted energy, enhanced immune support and improved skin and hair,” Dr. Al Jassas says. Treatments such as Vitamin IVs, NAD therapy and Glutathione IVs are some of the options at Alkem, addressing everything from skin brightness to antiaging benefits. Skin health is another priority for Dr. Al Jassas, who frequently encounters common concerns like sun damage and hyperpigmentation. “In this region, many patients struggle with uneven skin tone due to environmental factors. I’ve found that IV therapies, especially those containing Glutathione, effectively brighten skin and reduce pigmentation. With a personalised treatment plan, patients can see a noticeable improvement,” she says. Dr. Al Jassas encourages women in Bahrain to make their health a priority. “At Alkem, we offer a variety of services designed to support you, from bespoke IV therapies and fatburning injections to aesthetic treatments. We also provide naturopathic medicine, chiropractic care and nutritional advice,” she shares. For those embarking on their wellness journey, Dr. Al Jassas assures: “Whether you’re looking to manage stress, enhance your health, or simply maintain well-being, I’m here to guide you. At Alkem, your health is our priority, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.”
