bahrainthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 HEALTH 2 Therapy for Glowing Skin For those seeking to enhance both the health and appearance of their skin, intravenous (IV) therapy has emerged as a highly effective solution. Dr. Paulo Hypacio at ALKEM Health & Wellness, specialises in women’s health and skin wellness. The condition of our skin is often a direct reflection of our internal health. Factors such as poor hydration, nutrient deficiencies and high levels of oxidative stress can contribute to dull, fatigued skin. IV therapy directly addresses these concerns by efficiently replenishing the body’s hydration and nutrient levels, promoting optimal skin health from within. ALKEM’s Glowing Skin IV Therapy is specifically formulated to hydrate, nourish and rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level. This treatment delivers a potent blend of Vitamin C, glutathione and alpha-lipoic acid directly into the bloodstream, ensuring that the skin receives the essential nutrients required for a radiant, youthful glow. These powerful antioxidants and cofactors work synergistically to: • Reduce inflammation and combat oxidative stress • Neutralise free radicals that contribute to premature aging • Enhance collagen production, promoting skin firmness and elasticity Dr. Paulo emphasises: “IV therapy for glowing skin is one of the most efficient ways to support and maintain skin health. By delivering essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, we can correct hydration and nutrient deficiencies far more rapidly and effectively than oral supplementation. This treatment is an excellent addition to any comprehensive skincare regimen.” One of the primary advantages of IV therapy is its ability to bypass the digestive system, ensuring rapid and efficient absorption of nutrients. Unlike traditional skincare products that require consistent, prolonged use before visible results appear, IV therapy offers immediate and noticeable improvements in skin tone, texture and hydration. This makes it particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with nutrient deficiencies, dehydration or oxidative stress-induced skin damage. At ALKEM, holistic care is the foundation of its approach to wellness. It recognises that achieving healthy, luminous skin requires both internal and external support. IV therapy treatments are designed to complement your existing skincare routine while promoting longterm skin health and vitality. If you are seeking a more effective way to enhance your skin’s radiance, elasticity and overall health, IV therapy may be the ideal solution. Book your IV therapy consultation: 77973333 @alkem.bh

womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 PROPERTY 4 The Hidden Risks: PROTECTING FEMALE REAL ESTATE AGENTS IN BAHRAIN Despite Bahrain’s reputation for safety, female real estate agents face unique occupational risks. Karine Nalbandyan, founder of Master House Real Estate, is determined to raise awareness and drive change. Over two decades ago, Karine left a thriving media career in Ukraine to start a new chapter in the Kingdom with her Bahraini husband. As a former TV journalist and producer for Ukraine’s national channel, she also ran a successful family business. The transition was bold, but as she says: “Bahrain has given me new professional horizons, and became the place where my family and business could grow together.” Today, Karine is the founder and managing director of Master House Real Estate, a fullservice company offering consultancy, property management, marketing, design and renovation. “Coming from a background in media and business management, I felt an instant pull toward real estate, a field where creativity, strategy and communication come together,” she explains. What began as curiosity soon became a purpose-driven career. Karine expanded her education in real estate, hospitality and design, evolving her company’s offerings to include investment advisory, renovation and more. “Real estate is more than a profession for me; it’s a lifestyle and a platform to empower others and contribute positively to the community,” she adds. The Hidden Threats Despite the rewards, the career carries hidden dangers, especially for women. According to PeopleSafe, nearly one in three real estate agents globally has faced abuse while showing properties. Female agents, who often work alone, are disproportionately affected by verbal abuse, harassment and even physical threats. “Real estate in Bahrain may seem perfectly safe, especially as it’s one of the world’s safest countries,” Karine notes. “Yet for female agents, hidden risks remain.” Bahrain is indeed ranked among the top 20 safest countries globally, with a 30 percent drop in crime over four years. Yet the nature of property work means female agents regularly enter vacant or secluded spaces alone with strangers, often without CCTV, security personnel or witnesses nearby. These everyday situations can quickly turn unsafe. The imbalance is worsened by modern online practices. Karine highlights a troubling trend: “An additional risk arose recently when one of the property websites began requiring agents to display personal details, including full name, portrait photo and nationality, while visitors stay completely anonymous. Unfortunately, this opened the door to scammers and lawbreakers who can misuse personal data.” She knows the consequences first-hand. A routine viewing request spiralled into cyberbullying and harassment. Her personal information was misused, resulting in a criminal case that is now before the Bahraini courts. Silence and Stigma One of the greatest challenges is the culture of silence. Many female agents don’t report
womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 PROPERTY 5 TEN PRACTICAL SAFETY TIPS To help agents stay alert, Karine also shares 10 practical tips drawn from personal experience: 1. Share your schedule with someone you trust 2. Screen clients and request ID in advance 3. Confirm who will attend the viewing – unexpected visitors should not be allowed 4. Avoid isolated or poorly lit locations 5. Let clients walk ahead so you can observe them 6. Keep doors open and exits clear 7. Trust your instincts and cancel if you feel uneasy 8. Avoid viewings at night 9. Dress modestly and avoid flashy accessories 10. Use secret distress codes to notify colleagues of trouble incidents, fearing disbelief, embarrassment or professional repercussions. In some cases, agencies are more concerned with preserving their brand image than supporting staff. “I want female agents to feel empowered to set boundaries confidently, knowing the company and industry stand behind them,” Karine says. She believes the lack of reporting creates a false sense of security: “This silence can create the illusion that abuse ‘never happens’, when in reality, it can happen to anyone, anywhere.” The solution, she argues, lies in honest conversation, smarter regulation and collective accountability. A Call to Action Karine is calling on Bahrain’s Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) and other stakeholders to introduce practical safeguards. These include: • Mandatory Client Identification: Require users of property platforms to verify ID before contacting agents, ending the anonymity imbalance that exposes agents to potential danger. • Safety Training: Real estate companies must take responsibility for training agents to recognise red flags and avoid high-risk scenarios. • Lone Worker Safety Devices: Provide discreet SOS alarms that share location and activate emergency response when triggered by a code word. She says: “There is more awareness today, which is good, but we still have a long way to go. Brokerages and authorities need to openly discuss safety, adjust policies, provide training and make it part of company culture rather than leaving it to agents to figure out on their own.” Karine’s vision is not just about protecting herself or her staff, but reshaping industry norms. Through open dialogue, improved policies and modern safety tools, she believes Bahrain can set a standard for other markets to follow. “Safety isn’t just a personal responsibility, it should be part of how we do business,” she says. By speaking out, Karine hopes to transform silence into action and make the real estate sector safer, stronger and more inclusive for all. womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 INTERVIEW 7 Healing Through Play Play therapy is a type of therapy that uses play as a way for children to express their thoughts, emotions and experiences. While adults might talk, kids do their ‘talking’ through toys, games and imagination. Play becomes their language when words fall short, helping them process emotions and experiences that might be too big or confusing to explain otherwise. “I’ve always felt a natural pull toward helping others and have been drawn to the mental health field for as long as I can remember,” says Ms. Alumran. “But it wasn’t until I returned to school for my Master’s in Mental Health Counselling that I discovered play therapy. And that’s when everything clicked. “I’d always loved working with children, and play therapy felt like the perfect fit. Instead of relying on talking alone, children use play and their own language to act out their experiences, work through emotions and build resilience.” Her own path reflects deep dedication. “I did my undergrad in Psychology at Boston University and later earned my Master’s in Mental Health Counselling from the University of Massachusetts Boston,” she says. “Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with children, teens and young adults in a variety of settings, from schools in Boston and Bahrain to private counselling centres. Each role gave me a deeper understanding of how young people think, feel and understand their world.” This passion found its home at Mosanada, founded in 2016 by Dr. Siham Suwaigh. “Her vision was to create a space that nurtures not just the emotional and psychological health of children, but also equips parents with the tools and insight to support their kids more effectively,” says Ms. Alumran. “Mosanada offers play therapy for children, counselling for teens, parent workshops and even summer camps. There is a focus on creating a strong, supportive circle around the child because when the whole family feels supported, real progress happens.” Explaining what happens in a typical session, she says: “A play therapy session might look like a child having fun with toys, drawing, building something in a sand tray or playing a game, but there’s a lot going on beneath the surface. The therapist observes how the child plays, what themes or emotions come up, and how they express themselves through these interactions. We adapt based on the child’s needs and age, but the goal is always to help them feel safe, seen and empowered to cope with whatever life is throwing at them. ” Ms. Alumran has seen a major shift in Bahrain’s perception of mental health: “Since COVID, mental health awareness has grown significantly. Parents are far more willing to seek support for their kids, and there’s a growing understanding that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health. “If I was to advise anything, it would be please don’t underestimate the power of play. It might seem simple, but it’s absolutely vital for a child’s healthy development and long-term well-being.” As well as being a hobby, play is a powerful tool for emotional and psychological healing. Mai Alumran, a play therapist at Mosanada, shares how this transformative approach is changing lives.
womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 PARENTING 8 Rebuilding Bonds: NAVIGATING DIVORCE AS A FAMILY Ouiam El Hassani explores how families can navigate divorce with compassion and cooperation, helping parents and children adapt, rebuild trust and create a supportive environment for a stronger, more resilient future together. Divorce is a profoundly challenging journey for any family, often feeling like an earthquake that shakes the very foundations of what was once familiar and secure. Yet, even amidst the rubble of broken dreams and shifting landscapes, there is an opportunity to rebuild, redefine and emerge stronger, not just as individuals but as a reimagined family unit. It is a path that demands immense courage, boundless patience and an unwavering commitment to placing your children’s well-being at the heart of every decision. Acknowledging the Emotional Impact The initial shock of divorce can leave everyone reeling. It is vital to acknowledge and validate these powerful emotions, both for yourselves and for your children. There will be sadness, anger, confusion and fear, and it is natural for all of these feelings to exist. Creating a safe space where children feel seen and heard is essential. Explain the changes in an age-appropriate way, making it clear that the divorce is never their fault. Reassure them that while the structure of the family is changing, the love you have for them remains constant and unbreakable. This is not about sugar-coating reality but about providing a clear, consistent narrative that offers stability in an unstable time. Co-Parenting with Cooperation One of the most crucial elements in navigating divorce as a family is fostering a spirit of cooperation, even when it feels like the last thing you want to do. While your romantic relationship may have ended, your co-parenting partnership has just begun. This means striving for respectful communication, even in the face of disagreements. Children thrive on predictability, and consistent routines, whether it is homework time or bedtime, provide a much-needed sense of normality. Working together to create a unified front, even if it is simply agreeing on house rules or how to handle discipline, sends a powerful message to your children: their parents, despite their differences, are still a team. This does not require friendship, only a shared commitment to your children’s emotional security. Supporting Children Through Change Helping children adapt to new living arrangements can be particularly challenging. Whether it is two homes or a new dynamic in one home, maintaining open lines of communication about schedules, belongings and expectations is key. Empower your children by giving them a sense of control where possible, such as letting them choose a few special items to move between homes or decorate their space in each household. Flexibility is vital. There will be days when plans change or emotions run high, and being able to adapt with grace will go a long way in reducing stress. Be mindful, too, when introducing new partners. Although a new relationship might bring you happiness, children need time to adjust to the divorce and the new family structure before welcoming another adult into their lives. Patience and sensitivity are crucial. Building Resilience and Moving Forward Divorce can feel like a loss, and indeed it is, but it also presents an opportunity for growth and resilience. Encourage your children to express themselves through art, play or open conversation. Seek out support systems, whether it is a trusted friend, family member or therapist. You do not need to go through this alone, and prioritising your own emotional well-being will enable you to better support your children. Remember that children are remarkably resilient. With your unwavering love, guidance and a commitment to creating a peaceful and secure environment, they can not only survive divorce but truly thrive, learning invaluable lessons about adaptability, emotional strength and the enduring power of family in all its forms. It may not be the family you once envisioned, but with dedication and love, it can blossom into a strong and beautiful new chapter.

womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 BEAUTY 10 With beauty salons and spas, success depends on clear direction, fast decision-making and strong leadership. Over the years, I’ve helped launch and transform many salons across the region. And one lesson I’ve learned often is the hard way: One Captain! One Vision! Why Business Partnerships Often Sink the Ship. Every month, we invite readers to pose their own questions for Badia to answer in her next column. Make sure to ask your own by emailing [email protected] A k Badia Your Monthly Guide to Salon and Spa Success ? Partnerships in business rarely work! Of course, in theory, it sounds beautiful: two friends, two sisters or two professionals dreaming big together. But in reality? Most partnerships end in confusion, conflict and failure. I’ve seen it again and again. Why? Because business is not a democracy. It’s not a friendship circle. It needs a captain, not a committee. And when there are two (or more) people trying to lead the same ship, it ends up going nowhere. Or worse it sinks. I believe deeply in one decision-maker. One vision. One person takes the risk and takes responsibility. That’s how successful salons are built. In partnerships, people often don’t agree on prices, design, staff choices, suppliers, marketing or even simple daily decisions. Who decides in the end? The clients suffer. The team gets confused. The energy is lost. You can have support, advisors, or team leaders but you need one final voice, one direction, one plan. That’s leadership. That’s how you grow. So before starting a business with someone, ask yourself: • Can you both make fast decisions without ego or emotions? • Can you handle disagreements without it becoming personal? • Can you survive one partner putting in more effort than the other? If the answer is no don’t do it. I’ve seen friendships break, families split and good ideas die because of business partnerships. The beauty business is already full of challenges and don’t make it harder.
womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 BEAUTY 11 Trust is not the issue, direction is. Even with full trust, two people will have different ideas, styles and ways of managing problems. A business needs speed and clarity, not endless discussions. Trust can’t fix divided leadership. It’s not about love or friendship, it’s about structure and power Creativity is beautiful, but leadership is about execution, not just ideas. You can always invite ideas from your team, friends or consultants. But if two heads try to drive, the salon ends up lost. Great ideas are everywhere, what matters is who decides, who acts, and who takes responsibility. But what if I trust my partner 100 percent? Isn’t that enough to make it work? Isn’t two heads better than one when it comes to creativity and ideas? No – they’ll feel safer. When your team sees you stepping up, holding everyone to the same standard, they feel protected and respected. Strong leadership builds trust. Silence and avoidance only create fear and confusion. No. You have other options: investors, loans, small beginnings. A partner may cost you more in the long run in money, peace and power. Starting small but with full control is better than starting big with conflict. Growth is not about how fast you start, it’s about how solid you build. Can I keep a silent partner who invests but doesn’t interfere? If I can’t afford to start alone, isn’t partnership my only choice? Badia- Secret Garden Badia hosted an evening gathering at the Secret Garden, bringing together salon owners and industry professionals for an inspiring networking session.
womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 OPINION 12 As summer rolls in, parents often face the challenge of keeping their children engaged and learning. The long, carefree days of summer can sometimes lead to what educators call ‘summer slide,’ where kids lose valuable academic skills. Fortunately, there are practical steps parents can take to ensure that their children not only maintain but also enhance their cognitive abilities during these months. Understanding Your Child’s Needs Before diving into summer activities, it’s crucial to understand where your child stands academically. A cognitive assessment can provide insights into their strengths and weaknesses. These assessments evaluate various skills, including reading, writing and problem-solving, offering a clearer picture of your child’s cognitive landscape. With this information, you can tailor activities that target specific areas for improvement, ensuring a more effective approach to learning. Engage in Active Learning Summer is the perfect time to incorporate fun and engaging learning activities into your child’s routine. Here are a few ideas: 1. Reading Challenges: Create a summer reading list filled with age-appropriate books. Encourage your child to read daily by setting up a reward system. For every book completed, they could earn points towards a fun activity or small prize. 2. Writing Journals: Encourage your child to keep a summer journal. They can write about their daily activities, thoughts or even create fictional stories. This practice not only improves writing skills but also enhances creativity and self-expression. 3. Maths Games: Incorporate math into everyday activities. Cooking can be an excellent way to practice measurements, while shopping provides opportunities for budgeting and calculations. There are also plenty of online resources and apps that make math fun and engaging. Fun with Cognitive Training Cognitive skill training offers numerous benefits, including enhanced attention, improved memory and faster processing speed, all of which are essential for academic success. This approach is not only effective but also enjoyable, as it often involves games, puzzles and interactive activities that keep children engaged. By blending fun with learning, cognitive training helps kids develop essential skills in a playful environment, making the process feel less like work and more like an exciting challenge. This positive experience fosters a love for learning while equipping them with the tools they need for future success. Here are some more fun activities to consider: • Memory Games: Classic games like ‘Simon Says’ or card-matching games can boost memory by requiring children to recall positions and sequences. You can even create your own memory challenges using family photos or favourite items. • Puzzle Solving: Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and Sudoku can sharpen problem-solving skills and improve visualspatial abilities. Make it a family competition to see who can finish a puzzle the fastest! • Mindfulness Activities: Incorporating mindfulness exercises, such as yoga or meditation, can improve attention and Keeping Kids Sharp: A SUMMER GUIDE TO COGNITIVE SUCCESS focus. These activities encourage kids to be present, enhancing their ability to concentrate over time. • Interactive Storytelling: Engage your child in storytelling by having them create their own stories or act out scenes from their favourite books. This process helps improve memory, sequencing and narrative skills. Make Learning a Family Affair Learning doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Involve the whole family in educational pursuits. Organise game nights with board games that promote critical thinking, or plan family outings that include educational components, like museum visits or nature hikes. Discuss what you learn together, fostering a love for knowledge and exploration. Stay Consistent The key to preventing summer slide is consistency. Establish a daily routine that includes time for reading, writing and cognitive training. Short, regular sessions are often more effective than infrequent long ones. This structure not only keeps skills sharp but also instils a sense of discipline and responsibility in your child. Summer can be a wonderful opportunity for growth and learning. By understanding your child’s cognitive needs, engaging them in active learning, and focusing on fun cognitive training activities, you can prevent summer slide and set them up for a successful academic year ahead. Embrace the summer months as a time for both fun and learning, and watch your child thrive! Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst, Dr. Fifi Kiwan, discusses how to keep your children’s minds active during the summer downtime.
womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 NUTRITION 13 With temperatures often crossing 45°C and humidity levels that make it feel even hotter, stepping outside during daylight is not just uncomfortable – it can be dangerous. While air conditioning is a lifeline, long hours indoors with little movement, limited sunlight and erratic eating patterns can silently affect your health. If late-night walks aren’t feasible and indoor life is your norm during these months, here’s a Bahrain guide to staying healthy, hydrated and active – even during the hottest weeks. During summer, your metabolism naturally slows down. Heavy, spicy or fried food can make you feel sluggish. What your body needs is fresh, hydrating and gut-friendly food – all you need is to eat light, cooling and local. What to Eat? • Local fruits: watermelon, pomegranate, dates (in moderation), papaya and citrus fruits. • Fresh vegetables: cucumber, courgette, okra, ridge gourd (turai) and bottle gourd (lauki) – best consumed steamed, grilled or in curries. • Fermented dairy: plain laban, ayran or Greekstyle yoghurt – helps in cooling and digestion. • Lentils and legumes: moong dal, lentil stews or light hummus with cucumber. • Flatbreads and whole grains: fresh khubz, oats or millets like pearl millet (bajra) in porridge or roti form. • Don’t forget Middle Eastern mezze like tabbouleh, fattoush and mutabbal – naturally cooling and rich in herbs. It is always better to avoid fried foods like samboosa or falafel (save them for cooler days), high-fat meats and cream-based curries, overuse of garlic or chilli in extreme heat – it raises body temperature – and over-reliance on cold processed snacks like crisps or sugary yoghurts. In air-conditioned spaces, you may not feel thirsty but your body continues to lose water through skin and breath – especially in humid cities like Manama, Dubai or Doha. Stay Hydrated Through • Zaatar buttermilk: blend laban with a pinch of zaatar and mint. • Saffron-infused water (small quantity): known for its cooling and antioxidant properties. • Fennel or cardamom-infused water – keeps bloating at bay. • Coconut water (available fresh or bottled) – perfect electrolyte balance. • Lemon-mint water with pink salt and honey – Middle Eastern twist to lemon water. • Homemade tamar hindi (tamarind drink) without sugar. But these three need to be avoided: • Arabic coffee (qahwa) in excess, as it can dehydrate. • Black tea in large quantities. • Chilled colas, energy drinks or ‘sports drinks’ with synthetic additives. Your indoors are cool but your body’s natural systems still need attention – from digestion to sleep to immunity. It is important to maintain a consistent prayer and sleep schedule – aligning with the circadian rhythm helps metabolism. Always use cotton or linen thobes or abayas – light-coloured and breathable. It is advisable to use AC at a moderate temperature (23–26°C) to avoid dry skin and respiratory issues. Include one raw vegetable meal daily – salad or smoothie bowl. Habits That May Look Cool but Need to Change • Oversleeping in the afternoon – it can disturb digestion and night-time sleep. • Over-relying on chilled desserts – they shock the gut and cause mucus build-up. • Forgetting to moisturise skin and drink water – AC can dehydrate quickly. • Ignoring signs of mild dehydration – fatigue, dry eyes or low concentration. Staying physically active is important. Indoor walking of 100 steps every hour in your living space can be the new norm. Pilates, barre or mobility training – focused, low-sweat, strengthbuilding routines – can also be part of your daily routine. Zumba Gold or cultural dance (in moderation) is also a good alternative as it boosts mood and movement without heating the body. Middle Eastern summers teach us how to pause, listen to our bodies and practise restraint. Health during this season doesn’t mean pushing your limits – it means supporting your body to work with nature, not against it. So choose light meals, smart drinks, mindful movement and restful routines. Your AC may give you cool air – but it’s your lifestyle that will truly cool and nourish your inner system. womanthismonth.com | AUGUST 2025 OPINION 14 “It is literally impossible to be a woman.” That one line from Barbie, fiercely delivered by America Ferrera’s character Gloria, in her iconic speech, hit women around the world like a gut punch. Because it’s depressingly true. We’re expected to be thin, but not too thin. Confident, but not arrogant. Natural, but perfectly polished. Always striving, never enough. That speech doesn’t just live in a movie, it lives rent free in the lives of women all over the world. Women who are navigating a maze of impossible standards, trying to be everything to everyone, while constantly being told we’re falling short. And the beauty standard? That’s one of the most punishing mazes of all. The Double Standard Dilemma There’s this exhausting double standard we’re stuck in. If a woman decides to get fillers, Botox or cosmetic surgery, she’s ‘fake’ or ‘desperate.’ But if she chooses to embrace her wrinkles, stretch marks or grey hairs, she’s ‘let herself go.’ We’re told to age gracefully, but not too visibly. There’s always someone ready to comment, to critique, to suggest. And sadly, sometimes that someone is another woman. We’ve been so conditioned by unrealistic standards that we have started policing each other, forgetting we’re all struggling under the same weight. Social Media and the Comparison Trap Social media adds fuel to the fire. We scroll through picture-perfect faces and bodies, all filtered and edited to within an inch of reality, and yet we still compare ourselves. Often disappointed that we are inevitably falling short. The full lips. The snatched jawlines. The effortless skin. Even when we know it’s curated, it still affects us. For younger girls growing up with these images as the norm, it’s especially damaging. They’re not just being exposed to unrealistic standards, they’re being taught to equate their value to how closely they can imitate them. That’s not self-expression. That’s self-erasure. Diet Culture and the Illusion of Control Let’s not forget the body standards, which might be the most brutal of all. We’re taught to believe that being thinner (in all the right places, of course), automatically means being better. More disciplined, more attractive, more put together. It’s a lie that hides behind wellness trends, clean eating and toxic praise for weight loss, no matter the cost. For many women, chasing a specific number on the scale becomes a full-blown obsession. What starts as dieting can spiral into anxiety around food, disordered eating and a complete disconnect from one’s own body. It’s not about health, it’s about the illusion of control. When in reality it’s actually about a lack of it. The Goalposts Are Always Moving Perhaps the cruellest part of all this? The beauty ideal is constantly shifting. In the early 2000s, it was size zero. Remember when Kate Moss controversially said: “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels?” Then it was the hourglass Kardashian silhouette. Now it’s the ‘naturalbut-not-really’ aesthetic: glossy skin, sculpted features, just the right amount of casual effort. Trying to keep up is exhausting, expensive and impossible. And that’s the point. If you’re always chasing an unattainable look, you’ll always feel like you need fixing. And that means you’ll keep Chasing the Mirage: THE TRUTH ABOUT BEAUTY STANDARDS AND SELF-WORTH Rachel Radford is an expat teacher. Her column in Woman This Month dives into pivotal issues impacting women, reflecting her unique perspective and experiences. spending your money, time and self-worth trying to measure up. What If We Opted Out? So what if we stopped playing along? What if we looked at a woman and, instead of asking: “What has she done to her face?” we asked: “Is she happy? Is she free?” Whether she’s had aesthetic work or not, wears makeup or doesn’t, chooses to age naturally or smooths it out. It’s her call after all. Her body, her rules. The only thing we should be doing is supporting one another. Complimenting each other without comparison. Defending each other when the world tries to tear us down. Creating spaces where women feel safe to be real, not just “beautiful.” We Deserve Better, and We Deserve Each Other The system isn’t broken, it’s designed this way. But we’re allowed to reject it. We’re allowed to stop measuring our value in likes, kilograms or how closely we match this year’s beauty algorithm. The real glow-up? It’s when women start building each other up. When we stop whispering critiques and start shouting encouragement. When we raise our daughters, sisters and friends to know they are more than just a body to be judged. I’d like to end with one of my favourite quotes by author, editor and blogger Erin Keane: “Pretty isn’t the rent you pay to exist in this world as a woman.”

What does a typical workday look like for you? No two days are ever the same, which is what I love about this role. My mornings usually begin with reviewing performance metrics and engaging with our online community. From there, it’s a mix of planning content calendars, coordinating with the creative team, attending meetings and staying on top of global automotive and digital trends. There’s always something exciting in the pipeline, whether it’s a campaign launch or a new model release. What motivates you to work? I’m driven by creativity, specifically the power of digital media to shape perception and spark real connections. Seeing how our content impacts customer engagement or brand loyalty keeps me inspired. Plus, working in an industry that’s constantly evolving challenges me to grow and stay creative What have been some defining career milestones? Redefining Chery Bahrain’s social media tone of voice and strategy was a major one. Shifting from a product-focused to a community-driven narrative helped us foster a deeper connection with our audience. Describe your leadership style in one line Collaborative and always open to fresh ideas. If you weren’t in this role, what alternative career path would you have pursued? Definitely something within the creative or athletic space, maybe a full-time Muay Thai fighter or working in sports media. I’ve always been drawn to high-energy, purpose-driven work that allows me to express different sides of myself. Nadeen Yateem Social Media Executive at Chery What advice would you offer to someone just starting a career in marketing within the automobile industry? Understand the product but never forget the people. Cars are an emotional purchase, and great marketing speaks to lifestyle, values and aspirations, not just specs and features. Stay curious and always be ready to adapt. Your fave travel destination? And next one? My favourite so far has been Thailand. Between the food, the culture and the Muay Thai training, it felt like home. Next up, I’m hoping to explore Switzerland to be around the nature and animals and live a simple lifestyle for a bit. One piece of advice? Don’t wait for permission to lead. Whether you’re just starting out or years into your career, speak up, take initiative and let your work reflect your values. Anything new and exciting coming up at Chery Bahrain that we should look out for? Yes! Chery is always bringing new things to the table so you should definitely stay on the lookout on our Instagram @CheryBahrain for exciting things to come up Coffee or Tea? Tea. Instagram or TikTok? TikTok. Luxury car or sports car? As much as I am a sporty person, I love luxury cars. Sunrise or Sunset? Sunrise. Bookworm or Netflix binge? Tough, but Netflix will win here. Classic marketing (billboards & print) or digital-first marketing (social & apps)? Digital-first marketing. Weekend in Bahrain or quick getaway abroad? Always a quick getaway abroad!
