With staff chosen for their experience, aptitude and training in dealing with special needs, the Children’s Academy (TCA) provides a specialised education that other schools cannot offer. “Our school is unique not only to Bahrain but also to the gulf, with many families coming to us from outside of the Kingdom,” says TCA headmaster, Greg McDonald. In addition to the high quality teaching, the academy has two speech therapists, one occupational therapist, one physiotherapist, a behavioural therapist and a music therapist whose expertise can all be utilised even after school hours. Personalised teaching methods are highly regarded in the academy, with class sizes varying between four to ten students, allowing the teachers to efficiently divide their time. At TCA, the teaching and therapy team develop individualised educational plans for each and every child, adapting the teaching styles and programmes to meet their specific needs. “For those children who need additional communication skills we use Makaton, which is a language programme using signs and symbols to help children communicate,” adds Greg. Numicon, a multi-sensory maths approach, provides a structured apparatus to raise achievement in maths and is also used to heighten the skills of the students. Following the British National Curriculum, together with the International Primary Curriculum, TCA undergoes a rigorous inspection process from the UK to ensure that the teaching, therapy and management team is outstanding. The school accepts students aged from three to eleven years, while slightly older children can be accepted if they are working at an academic level lower than their age.
