Diabetics are three to four times more likely to develop periodontal disease, with a higher rate of more severe levels of bone loss and gum infection. Periodontal or gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, ligaments and bone that support the teeth and hold them in the jaw. Untreated, it may cause tooth loss. The main cause is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colourless microbial film that constantly forms on your teeth. Periodontal disease may make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. The body's reaction can increase blood sugar levels, so, it’s important for diabetics to treat and eliminate infection. Periodontal treatment combined with antibiotics has been shown to improve blood sugar levels in diabetics, suggesting that treating periodontal disease could decrease insulin requirements.
