For autumn-winter 17, this most traditional of fabrics gets a rebirth with everyone from Stella McCartney to Gucci sending chequered looks down the runway. At DSquared2 the style was funky with brightly clashing colours topped by tweed; Junya Watanabe harked back to the era of punk (and check out the Avatar-style makeup) while Gucci, Hermes, Etro and Loewe each gave very different takes on classic looks from bright and girly to cool and sombre. Quintessential British designer Jenny Packham even went so far as to debut a tartan ball gown and voluminous plaid skirts topped with statement tees.
