www.womanthismonth.com 75 October 2014 Comprehensive Care Founded in 2003, the Gulf Diabetes Specialist Centre (GDSC) is a unique facility dedicated to the treatment of diabetes and related conditions. “Diabetes involves a wide variety of complications. At GDSC, we emphasise on screening and early detection, even when the patient may not be manifesting symptoms. The sooner the condition is detected, the better the outcome,” says Dr Nasreen AlSayed, medical director, GDSC. The Centre provides comprehensive medical and clinical assessment for diabetics, with dietary consultations, podiatry care and diabetic foot care as well as annual ophthalmic assessments at GDSC eye centre. “We provide diabetes education, which involves educating patients, relatives and caregivers in diabetes complications, regular home blood sugar monitoring, insulin injection techniques and answering queries. We also offer insulin pump therapy in addition to health packages tailored to diabetic and non-diabetic patients,” she says. The GDSC is a hub for endocrine care including thyroid disorders and even thyroid cancer, offering ultrasound and laboratory tests, managing pituitary disorders and polycystic ovary syndrome in addition to osteoporosis screening and bone health. Back from the US after completing further training in endocrinology, Dr Nasreen plans to introduce new services at the GDSC in time for the tenth anniversary next year. “We will focus on paediatric care, obstetric care, specialising in endocrine disorders and diabetes in children. Cardiology is another area we’re planning to serve as diabetic patients often tend to develop heart complications,” she says. The GDSC has clientele from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait and UAE in addition to Bahrain residents. Call 17 239-186. Launched as a specialist centre for diabetes treatment, the facility in its tenth year will offer a complete spectrum of services in women and children’s health care. Dr Nasreen Al-Sayed
