Woman This Month - November 2018

www.womanthismonth.com November 2018 39 showcase When the pre-treatment consultation form at Dessange’s plush spa asked the date of my last facial, I cringed as I wrote "almost a year ago". Pushing all images of beauticians rolling their eyes out of my head, I followed Chenda, my therapist, into a pristine white room for the 75-minute Dermalogica Oxygen Facial I had signed up for. First came the pre-cleanse. A fragrant oil was smoothed over my face to lift away make-up and other impurities, and wiped off with a warm washcloth. Then Chenda used the 'bt-analyze apparatus' over the zones of my face to ‘map’ my skin. The digital readings proved I have combination skin. Wearing what looked like nightvision goggles with a small light beam, she pored over my skin up close. Gone are the days of guesswork in skincare at modern establishments like Dessange; they keep up with the latest innovations in beauty. She found enlarged pores (the bane of my life), but no fine lines or wrinkles (hurray!). Aware of my exact skin type, she could customise the facial with the right Dermalogica products, just for me. A special cleansing gel was applied, followed by resurfacing the skin with a microsonic facial cleansing brush. She then applied a gentle, daily-use exfoliating powder that released the goodness of papain, salicylic acid and rice enzymes to eradicate dead skin cells. Using the bt ultrasonic blade, she proceeded to emulsify sebum, dilate follicles and soften comedones. Simply put, she got rid of ugly blackheads using a pain-free technique. I admit she did have to wield the good old manual blackhead extractor around my nose and chin, but serves me right for slacking off on skin care. A blissful pressure-point massage on the head and shoulders facilitated lymphatic drainage, eliminated toxins and relaxed the tissues. A light, facial toner was spritzed all over to hydrate and refresh, after which a niacinamide ion-active serum (to control and prevent adult acne) and a cooling botanical colloidal mask with hydrating hyaluronic acid were applied to the skin. It did sting a tad, but only for a few seconds. For the next 15 minutes, the bt-accent AIR Oxygen machine blew highly concentrated molecules of oxygen all over my facial epidermis. Combined with the mask, it is meant to nourish skin and promote collagen growth, resulting in plumper, supple, hydrated skin. Lastly, I was prepped to face the hot outdoors with an eye serum, to de-puff and brighten the under-eye area, and a superhydrating sunscreen. The man of the house complimented my fresh skin that evening, but I put it down to him being polite in the knowledge of my beauty appointment. But his observation of how bright and dewy my face looked three days after the treatment just proved the efficacy of Dermalogica’s Oxygen Facial at Dessange. Call 17 713-999.
