It falls on the night of the full moon in the 12th lunar month. Young couples draped in traditional finery, gather around lakes, rivers and canals to float the Krathong, a lotus-shaped container made of banana leaves, containing a candle, incense sticks, flowers and coins, into the water. At the same time they light lanterns which are released into the night sky creating a stunning spectacle. These festivals take place across the country but are best known in Chiang Mai, the north’s ancient Lanna capital, which offers blissful relaxation or a full exciting calendar, depending on your wishes. Try a century-old egg at a street market. The area abounds with temples and Wat Phra Singh is one of the most venerated. No visit to Thailand would be complete without a ride in a tuk-tuk. Visit a floating market. The release of the festival lanterns is a breath-taking sight. Trek, bike or enjoy other adventures in the surrounding mountains. Chiang Mai Floating decorated baskets pay respect to the river godess.
