The Great Barrier Reef stretches out for 2000 kilometres along the coast, making it look like a living wall, full of diverse ecosystems, visible even from space! X-factor: A major point from which to set off for a trip to the reef, Cairns is the best place to book a diving expedition. The Great Barrier Reef marine park, consisting of hundreds of impressive uninhabited islands with secluded beaches, makes for a unique holiday where you can explore the reef area with snorkelling or diving equipment. Best for: The curious kind. The lack of rain and the warm weather make November the optimum time to witness a true wonder of the natural world. A little towards the south, you will find Fraser Island. Although the reef does not extend to this island, it is a beautiful mix of sand, sea, forests and lakes. Listed on the World Heritage List, it would be a shame to miss it.
