Woman This Month - November 2011

78 | November 2011 | woman this month Showcase In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox — a combination of Victoria, his mother, and inox, meaning stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing and, famously, Swiss army knives. The original product dates back to 1897, when he patented the sports knife he supplied to the Swiss army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to what it is known as today. The Swiss army knife has become a metaphor for versatility in countries around the world. In Bahrain, the sole distributor for the machine of sorts is Yaquby Stores. Together with Victorinox, the outlet held a photo challenge this year. To enter the competition, all you needed to do was send a photograph which best displayed how the branded penknives have been a companion for life. The competition had overwhelming success and the entries flooded in. Clearly, Victorinox has found a special place in Bahrain. Due to the response to last year’s competition, they have decided to reintroduce it in 2012. You can begin entering the 2012 competition as early as the first week of November this year.Check out their Facebook page for daily updates. Your search keywords are “Victorinox photo challenge”.
