showcase May 2016 www.womanthismonth.com 56 What would your advice be for women who are trying to conceive? It’s very important for women to start taking folic acid three months before conception, to prevent neuro defects. In addition, if they can see an obstetrician gynecologist for thorough pre-conception counselling, it would be beneficial. Depending on the doctor’s assessment, you may need to have a few tests carried out, such as a blood test. Counselling is especially important for women with genetic issues, those who have difficulty conceiving or those who have a history of miscarriage. Is it true that stress can sometimes cause problems for conceiving? Yes, it is very important to be stress free and not worry too much about falling pregnant. It’s easier said than done, especially when women get asked constantly from friends and family about when they are going to have a baby. Although there is never any malice intended, family and friends do add to the pressure especially for those who are having a hard time conceiving. But try not to overthink and worry about it. What about exercise and diet? It is very important, especially for those who are obese, to exercise to reduce weight. As well as this, a well-balanced diet recommended by the doctor should also be incorporated to ensure a healthy start for a possible pregnancy.
