Having put the last issue to bed, I was ready for a well-deserved massage. So it was a welcome surprise when I was asked to test out a traditional treatment at the Middle East Medical Center (MEM), home to the Santhigiri Ayurvedic Center. Having tried a traditional drip head massage many moons ago, I was excited at the prospect of a rejuvenation massage. I was greeted by a friendly receptionist, Akhila, who would also perform the treatment, and was shown to the traditional room with a wooden massage table in the centre and tranquil background music. Once appropriately dressed (or rather undressed), she started with a quick head massage and then lay me down for the fullbody treatment. Not particularly fond of oil massages, I was a bit apprehensive at first, but Akhila assured me that the herbal oil she was using was light and could be easily washed off. Every inch of my body, from head to toe, was slathered in the fragrant hot herbal oil as she began rigorous massaging with her expert hands. I could feel the tension easing as she fluttered her fingers on every limb to the rhythm of the chirping birds. She then cleansed my face with rose water, applied honey and gently massaged my face. The treatment ended with 10 minutes in the steam room, followed by a cleansing shower. I left feeling rejuvenated, energised and my skin felt as soft as a baby’s bottom. It was a new and invigorating experience to say the least, definitely one to try if you like oil massages. MEM has two branches, located in Hidd and Salmabad.
