Dr Roland Mouawad (Dr R), obstetrics and gynaecology specialist at Royal Bahrain Hospital: All pregnant women are required to have two ultrasound scans: one at 1213 weeks and one at 20-22 weeks into the pregnancy. These ultrasounds are necessary in order to check for possible foetal anomalies. Complicated pregnancies, those with hypertension and diabetes, may need to have an ultrasound scan in every visit. WTM: How many ultrasound scans can be done during a pregnancy? Dr R: In many countries, ultrasound scans have been restricted to two scans during pregnancy. However after more than 60 years of use, there have been no side effects reported, neither to the mother nor to the foetus. Sometimes, a mother’s anxiety regarding her foetus’ wellbeing can be relieved by a five-minute ultrasound scan. WTM: What kind of information can an ultrasound provide? Dr R: With good equipment in good hands, tremendous information about the foetus’ wellbeing can be obtained. With the advancements in ultrasound technology, today we have reached a point where we can have a preview of the foetus in three dimensions, along with colour preview. This gives pregnant women even more satisfaction for when they would like to ‘check up’ on their baby. 4D Ultrasound Imaging is now available at Royal Bahrain Hospital.
