Womanthismonth.com March 2024 5 Welcome to another fabulous edition of Woman This Month, which is proudly a separate publication once again! As a young tween, and then teenager, I would eagerly wait for my monthly allowance to buy magazines and novels. Pictures of my favourite musicians and actors would be ripped out and pasted on my walls and I’d read every magazine from cover to cover. Woman This Month, believe it or not, was among these publications seeing as the first edition was published in 2003. Journalism and story-telling soon came naturally to me, but if you’d ever told me “Farah, someday you’ll be writing your first ever editor’s letter for Woman This Month.” I’d love the thought of it but probably would not believe you. Now the moment is here and it’s surreal. My point here is that with this edition, celebrating International Women’s Day, we get to tell the stories of other incredible women that were once little girls with big dreams and aspirations too. They have persevered, contributed to various sectors and made all the difference. In recognition of these contributions, we are proud to announce the launch of our annual ‘Woman of the Year’ awards which will take place for the first time in December 2024. Be sure to keep up with every edition, womanthismonth.com and our official social media accounts for updates! On that note, I’m sure we can all agree that the women we grow up to be is inspired largely by our mothers. I know I am! They put their heart and soul into our upbringing, and so it’s only fair on March 21 (mark your calendars) that we show our affection towards them. You can find inspiration for gifts in our guide. Keeping our finger on the forever beating pulse of fashion, we bring you some inspiration for your formal wear with IZEL. We have also put together a fantastic collection of beauty essentials for when you’re in need of some TLC! This month, in our Parenting section, Ouiam El Hassani guides you on when it’s best to go through your child’s phone. Meanwhile, Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst Fifi Kiwan celebrates Brain Awareness Week by sharing her tips for nurturing our cognitive abilities. Seeing as this edition is quite special, our team will be hosting a grand celebration at The Art Hotel and Resort that is being sponsored by the official distributor of Porsche in Bahrain, Behbehani Motors. We would sincerely like to thank both entities for their invaluable support. For 21 years now we have told her story, and now she’s back! We dedicate this special edition to you – our readers. International Women’s Day International Women’s Day (IWD) is observed on March 8 every year across the world. In celebration of the inspirational women who have contributed to every facet of Bahrain’s society, the Woman This Month team is proud to present a special feature highlighting women from various sectors. Women, by nature, are nurturing individuals. It is this natural instinct that drives women to put their heart and soul into every aspect of their lives, be it professional or personal. In society too, the sheer dedication of women has been demonstrated and observed across several key sectors including (but certainly not limited to!) entrepreneurship, politics, healthcare, education, sports and arts. International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The occasion goes well beyond the handing out of casual roses and themed cupcakes, but is rather a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and the need to persevere for further progress. It is, after all, progress not perfection. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Inspire Inclusion’. The whole premise of the campaign is to emphasise the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society to achieve gender equality. Efforts to highlight the contributions of women to society and initiatives to promote further involvement and progress have been consistent in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In fact, the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) led by HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM King Hamad and SCW President, have been far more than commendable in this regard. SCW was established in 2006 to promote women’s rights and their participation in society, and the results of its unwavering support and initiatives have been felt. Bahraini Women’s Day was launched by HRH Princess Sabeeka in 2008 to highlight the achievements of Bahraini Women. Celebrated on December 1 annually, the day is quite significant as a part of Bahrain’s history as it marks the beginnings of formal education for women in Bahrain with the opening of Bahrain’s first girls’ school in 1928. Furthermore, the SCW spearheaded a youth architectural competition in association with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities which led to the inauguration of the national monument ‘Athar’ on Bahraini Women’s Day in 2022. Recent figures indicate that the role of women in Bahrain continues to grow at a steady pace. At the Atlantic Council’s empowerME Initiative, held in July 2023, key panelists highlighted their remarkable achievements. Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United States, HE Shaikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, revealed that Bahraini women account for about 43 percent of the labour force due to SCW’s reforms. Furthermore, Chairman of the empowerME initiative at the Atlantic Council, Amjad Ahmad, stated that women in Bahrain make up 83 percent of tertiary school enrollments, 54 percent of the public sector workforce, and 45 percent of leadership positions in official state agencies. In the private sector, women comprise 35 percent of the workforce, hold 17 percent of board seats, and occupy 35 percent of managerial roles. There’s no denying that women have a voice and an essential role to play in the overall development of the world. As we continue to work towards an equal society, may the voice of all women continue to be heard, and may their powerful presence be felt. Let’s Inspire Inclusion! Happy International Women’s Day from all of us at Woman This Month! STRENGTH OF Womanthismonth.com March 2024 13

PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 16 March 2024 Horse racing has long been known to be a male-dominated field. However, Bahrain’s first female jockey and renowned equestrian, Manal Fakhrawi, has broken down barriers and inspired a new generation of female riders. She tells the Woman This Month team more. Days out at the stables with family proved to be the start of Ms. Fakhrawi’s passion for horse riding. While most young children might shy away from the majestic animals, she grew a fondness for them. “I was just three or four years old when I’d visit the stable. My two elder sisters used to ride as a hobby, and I’d be around the horses watching them. That’s really where it all started,” she reminisces. “I was too young to ride, so I’d feed them and first began riding a year or two later.” Being part of a family that participated in sports and extracurricular activities, she naturally gravitated to an active lifestyle. “My siblings and I tried our hand at countless sports and activities, but the main thing that appealed to me about equestrianism is that you’re dealing with an animal … you’re dealing with a soul,” she says. “Equestrianism teaches you empathy, compassion, patience, and how to read people’s emotions and those of animals too,” she adds. Now a seasoned equestrian, she credits the experience as one that has shaped her life. “I’ve achieved so much. I believe that sports, in general, is very important but riding taught me how to live my life. It’s about learning how to overcome obstacles and tackle challenges. It’s about learning to fail and carrying on because it is failure that teaches you about life and yourself,” she says passionately. Being a member of Bahrain’s Royal Endurance Team since 2000, she has seen the presence of horse riding grow tremendously in the Kingdom. “The first race that Bahrain hosted was in 1999 and was the beginning of understanding the sport itself. It was something new to the Kingdom. Going from learning about the sport to being the world champions is something that I’m so proud of,” she says. The Kingdom has supported the infrastructure of equestrianism in Bahrain to allow spectators to enjoy the sport, in addition to facilitating overseas participation of riders too. “There is a lot involved in this sport and it’s evolving with time. There’s so much that you have to constantly keep up with because it’s not only dealing with athletes and horses. Science, medicine, and how to improve both the athletes’ horses and the riders’ stamina are taken into consideration,” she says. While the journey of being Bahrain’s first female jockey has been exciting, it is a journey that is not without challenges. Ms. Fakhrawi has had to forge a path in what is largely considered a male-dominated sport to this very day. “The main challenge I had was me being a little girl challenging men and people not believing in what I was capable of. I was always proving that we were equal, especially in equestrianism. It’s one of the sports where men and women compete against each other as we don’t have separate categories,” she says. Hoping to foster a safe, comfortable and encouraging environment for women to take up horse-riding, she opened Fakhrawi Stables. “I see a rise in female equestrians nowadays. My advice to women wanting to venture into the field is to just keep going. There’s always going to be someone telling you to stop through actions or words; just keep going!” she concludes. PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 18 March 2024 PROPELLING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS The appointment of Her Excellency Asako Okai as Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Bahrain marks a significant milestone in the enduring friendship between the two nations as they navigate a rapidly-evolving global landscape. Kristian Harrison spoke with her to discuss her commitment to fostering deeper ties, her key priorities and the opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation. Your Excellency, congratulations on being appointed as Ambassador of Japan to Bahrain. What has been your diplomatic career path so far? What personal experiences or values shape your approach to diplomacy? Through my 35-year career in the Japanese Foreign Service and at the United Nations, I gained an extensive track record in development, humanitarian, disaster management and peacebuilding work at both strategic and operational levels of bilateral and multilateral contexts. The last five years, I was serving as Director of Crisis Bureau at an Assistant Secretary General level in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Transformation, innovation and financing were the key elements of success. My services abroad as a Japanese diplomat include stints in the UK, Pakistan, Australia, New York as Permanent Mission to the UN, Sri Lanka, and as Consul General of Japan in Vancouver, Canada. Key posts held in Tokyo include Director for African Affairs and senior positions in the International Cooperation Bureau. My approach to diplomacy is driven by such a belief that the world should help each other and should compete in finding solutions that work for everyone and for the planet, not for your own selfish interests. What are your priorities and aspirations for your term as Ambassador? Fortunately, Bahrain and Japan are already enjoying a steadfast relationship, and we are on track to make it even stronger. In the rapidly changing, but also complexly troubled world, Bahrain and Japan can

PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com March 2024 19 enhance partnerships at a strategic level to address global agendas including peace and sustainable development. My aspiration during my term is to take steps that would contribute to making a difference and achieving results. My top priority is facilitating businesses to widen and deepen collaborations particularly in emerging areas, such as sustainable energy transition, to support Bahrain’s transformation and diversification of economies. We can seek win-win solutions that are economically viable while shaping a new sustainable future. Secondly, I would like to raise the visibility of each other’s strengths and appealing points through promoting culture, food, tourism and more. Thirdly, recognising Bahrain’s strategic positioning in the Arab region, which has great implications to the global peace and security, I would like to explore ways for further collaborations in areas concerning security and stability. What have been your first impressions of Bahrain and how are you liking it here? I have found the Bahraini people to be most hospitable, kind and open-minded. Wherever I go, I am grateful for the warm welcome, offers of support and tremendous interests in partnering with Japan. People outside the region have a certain stereotyped perception over women’s role in Arab society. Contrary to that, I was genuinely delighted to see that gender equality is taken at face value in Bahrain. Bahrain’s commitment to freedom of choice, human rights and peaceful coexistence of all religion and ethnicities is commendable. These are aspects of Bahraini people and life that I want to promote in Japan and elsewhere. What are the current trade figures between the two nations? What steps you plan to take to promote trade and investment? The total bilateral trade amounted to USD1.5 billion in 2023. The imports from Japan to Bahrain reached USD680 million with a 48 percent increase compared to 2022 due to increasing automobile and related goods. Japanese car makers occupy a major share in Bahrain; namely over 50 percent of the non-luxury market and over 30 percent of the luxury market. Exports from Bahrain to Japan amounted to USD820 million, with a 38 percent decline against 2022, attributed to a drop in Crude Oil, Diesel and Aluminium. Japanese investments in Bahrain concentrated on electricity generation, water desalination and financing projects, while exploring potential future moves into petrochemicals, manufacturing, sustainable generation of electricity and water, waste-to-energy solutions and environmental protection. And, as Bahrain is becoming a regional hub for technology start-ups, there are great opportunities for Japan to invest in futureoriented sectors, like gaming, e-commerce, FinTech and AI. How popular is Japan as a tourist destination in Bahrain? The recent years have witnessed a remarkable increase in tourism exchange. The number of tourist visas issued by the Japanese Embassy in Manama increased by 60 percent in 2023 compared with 2019. The Japanese government considers the Arab and Muslim region the fastest growing emerging market for inbound tourism. Similarly, we are also witnessing growing interests in outbound tourism towards GCC countries from Japan. We have seen the love and passion in Bahrain for the Japanese culture and its food. How does the embassy plan to further foster the understanding of Japanese culture in the Kingdom? We are appreciative of the support by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in organising cultural activities and events including exhibitions of Japanese traditional arts and the annual Japanese Film Festival. Last month, we hosted the traveling exhibition “I love Sushi”. Food will be given a special focus throughout the year as we continue to promote it. What specific areas do you see for increased collaboration between the two nations? Firstly, I am thrilled by the ongoing collaboration in archaeological excavation and research. Currently, two Japanese teams are working on examining burial mounds from the ancient Dilmun period in Wadi Al Sail and from the Tylos period in Maqaba. Recently, they organised a regional workshop to employ digital techniques and virtual reality for conservation of cultural heritage. Additionally, Bahrain and Japan are coming together through the signing of an MoU to establish the Bahrain Centre for Arabian Gulf Archaeology and Cultural Heritage to advance and promote research on archaeology and cultural heritage in the Arabian Gulf countries. Secondly, on aerospace exploration, building on a successful launch of the Bahraini-Emirati satellite Light 1 into space orbit through the platform of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Bahrain’s National Space Science Agency (NSSA) and JAXA have been constantly exploring new cooperation opportunities in space science training, research and development, with a focus on upskilling Bahraini talents in this field. Thirdly, ongoing bilateral and multilateral defence and security cooperation with Bahrain is playing a crucial role in enhancing regional security and freedom of navigation. Since 2009, Japan has been a member of CTF 151, the international anti-piracy force under the Bahrain-based Combined Maritime Forces. Bilateral defence cooperation is also expected to expand, with a revised MoU on Defence Cooperation and Exchange being signed last year. Finally, we attach importance in fostering the next generation of Bahraini leaders by offering educational and upskilling opportunities such as the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship programme and the Ship for World Youth programme. In cooperation with Tamkeen, since 2010 more than 100 Bahrainis have received training at Yokogawa Middle East & Africa, and a new cooperation scheme with Japan’s leading application developer E-Growth is underway. Is there anything you would like to add, Your Excellency? I would like to take this opportunity to thank HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the people of Bahrain for their great appreciation towards Japanese culture, history and what Japan can offer for Bahrain. I look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to further advance our relations to a new level.

Her dedication and passion towards her work and team members reflects on the high morale of the team. On several occasions she has taken time out from her busy schedule to mentor a team member be it personal or professional. On a personal level, I love the vibe we have that makes it easier to work together to get the desired result. You are both women in leading roles working closely together. What’s one misconception that you would like to put to rest when it comes to women in leading positions? VV: The stereotype that women leaders rely on emotion over logic is outdated, as they are often seen as too emotional or soft to handle tough business decisions or high-pressure situations, which can hinder their progression to higher leadership roles. Yet, my involvement in guiding transformative retreats has revealed a different perspective. PS: The perception that successful women leaders must be aggressive and loud. Many successful female leaders embody the strength and clarity of assertiveness, softness, openness and femininity, which resonates with me and I hope to implement that in my work life. InterContinental Bahrain currently employs 45 women. What are your thoughts on the role of women in the industry? The strengths of hiring women in hospitality include our strong communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to foster positive guest and colleague’s experiences through empathy and understanding. With Bahrain’s hospitality sector becoming increasingly competitive, how does InterContinental keep its offering attractive? What sets the property apart from the rest? InterContinental Bahrain maintains its competitive edge by continuously innovating, utilising technology for enhanced guest experiences, and focusing on personalised services. The property also emphasises sustainability, community engagement and integrating local culture into its hospitality, resulting in unique and memorable experiences for guests. What are some of the main activities planned at InterContinental for the Holy Month of Ramadan? InterContinental Bahrain always connected with local culture and traditions. Every year during Ramadan we highlight the nuances of this beautiful country. This year we have chosen to honour the concept of the Souq through the eyes of an artist. We have tied up with the local well know artist called Abbas Al Mosawi and his paintings of the Souq along with a local brand called ‹Annada’, and will have them on display at our lobby during the entire month as an ode to the souq. Our Ramadan offers include Iftar and Ghabga every day at the Regency Tent with artists that includes a harpist for Iftar and a singer for Ghabga. We have also introduced special nights on weekdays which have become quite popular. These include a ladies night on Monday with 50 percent off Iftar and Ghabga, a men’s Ghabga on Tuesdays for half price, and every Sunday hoteliers are welcome for 50 percent off on Iftar and Ghabga. Visjna, what would you say are some of the plans for the near future at InterContinental? In the near future, InterContinental Hotel aims to continue developing Bahraini colleagues through tailored training programmes while focusing on enhancing its food and beverage offerings to meet evolving guest preferences. The ultimate goal is to foster guest loyalty by delivering exceptional service and personalised experiences; ensuring guests become advocates for the InterContinental for life. What’s one thing you are looking forward to the most in the 2024? VV: As the Director of Sales and Marketing, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to implement innovative strategies that will further elevate our hotel’s market presence and guest satisfaction in 2024. Any message for our readers on the occasion of International Women’s Day? VV: Believe in your abilities, advocate for yourself, challenge the status quo and never underestimate the power of your voice in shaping the world around you. PS: Embrace your superpower and wear your cape with pride. It’s important to be yourself. Don’t try and change to fit an ideal that you think is accepted. In reality, it’s your difference and uniqueness that make you stand out and add value at work. Is there anything else you would like to add? In closing, we encourage all women to embrace their unique strengths, challenge the status quo and persist in their pursuit of excellence, knowing that their contributions are invaluable and their potential limitless. PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 26 March 2024 Ms. Girmay exudes a profound pride in her heritage, a driving force behind her relentless pursuit of excellence. Reflecting on her roots, she acknowledges Bahrain’s pivotal role in nurturing her aspirations, citing its dynamic environment, diverse opportunities and supportive community as catalysts for her endeavours. “If Bahrain does not motivate us, I don’t think we would all be here,” she says. “The environment, the people the opportunities … we have a platform to pursue our goals and dreams while there is always something new. We are very lucky.” “Bahrain is where I met my husband, where I gave birth to my children, and the lifestyle is how they were raised. My kids are looking forward to come back to Bahrain soon, it’s where they feel at home, even more so than France which is where my husband is from,” she adds. Her appointment as Brand Ambassador is not actually Ms. Girmay’s first experience with Woman This Month. Her association with the magazine dates back to her being featured on the cover in 2004, The Woman This Month team continues to expand with the appointment of Eskedar Girmay, known to her friends as Esky, as Associate Editor and Brand Ambassador. In this article, we embark on a brief journey of her career, a remarkable life story encompassing roles as diverse as Honorary Consul, film producer, actress, author and philanthropist. With roots in Ethiopia and a thriving presence in Bahrain, Ms. Girmay’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of compassion and perseverance. A REMARKABLE WOMAN

PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com March 2024 27 following her triumph in a July Rose Beauty Contest. Notably, she shares the distinction of being featured twice on the cover, a testament to her enduring impact. However, it was her diplomatic career where she first made great strides on the international scene. It began when she served as the Honorary Consul of Ethiopia, a role she embraced with dedication and fervour as she worked on improving bilateral relations between the two countries. Alongside her diplomatic responsibilities, she ventured into the world of cinema, collaborating with prestigious organisations like the United Nations’ International Labour Organisation (ILO) on impactful projects. A decade ago, her debut in Ethiopian cinema, Tikur Engda (Unexpected Guest) premiered to packed theatres in Bahrain Seef Cinema, striking a chord with fans with its powerful themes and tackling the difficult issue of adoption and what might go wrong when an adopted child seeks out their birth parents. Alongside this, she has published three books, each bearing testament to her diverse experiences and reflections. Fuelled by her innate penchant for storytelling, these works offer poignant insights into her life’s tapestry, with themes ranging from memoirs to explorations of cross-cultural marriages and fictional narratives. She explains: “The short stories I wrote preCovid, but the pandemic really emphasised how much I wrote in my diary. The extra time at home allowed me to go through it and solidify it into a further narrative. “During this process, I started developing new stories and I started to write more and more, which turned into three books. So the first one is similar to a memoir and in fact, one of the stories is dedicated to Bahrain, saying thank you to the Kingdom and its people for making us feel home. I actually wrote it in my language, but that part is written in both languages, English and Amharic, and the book is available on Amazon. “The second book is called The White Man’s Wife. It’s experimental; I took mine and seven other people’s mixed marriages and I talked about the perceptions from both cultures and how we are taken from two different angles. I have the perspective of an Ethiopian man who’s married to a French woman, then vice versa which is me married to a French man. The third one is a collection of pure fiction.” Beyond her professional pursuits, Ms. Girmay’s philanthropic endeavours have left an indelible mark. For over half her life, she has dedicated herself to charitable causes, extending support to the less fortunate in various capacities and promoting her country Ethiopia. Her altruistic efforts encompass a spectrum of initiatives, from aiding individuals battling illnesses to fostering bilateral relationships for mutual cultural enrichment. “My house has always open to those who are less fortunate,” Ms. Girmay explains. “My family and I have been involved in taking care of people for more than half my life, whether in translating, hospital visits, supporting and finding funds for those who are going through cancer or other kind of illness.” Throughout her journey, Ms. Girmay confronted myriad challenges, including instances of unwarranted ethnic profiling and judgment. Yet, armed with resilience and unwavering familial support, she navigated these obstacles with grace, recognising the distinction between government actions and her identity as a proud Ethiopian. Ms. Girmay’s ability to strike a balance between her professional commitments and personal life is a testament to her resilience and adaptability. While her earlier years were marked by dedication to philanthropy, she subsequently prioritised her role as a mother, cherishing moments with her children amidst her multifaceted responsibilities. “I had to let go of our helper and literally dedicate myself to my children the last few years to compensate for the time I relied on her,” she explains. “Although I tried to balance it all, it felt as if I was not giving enough time to them. At times, I was more invested in my charity work because I believed there were people who needed me more than my own children. But there were genuinely times where my children were waiting for me to come home and they fell asleep waiting for me. I had that guilty feeling and then realised one day that my kids were suddenly about to go to university and that I had a small time left to be a dedicated full-time mother and had to find more balance.” In commemorating International Women’s Day, Ms. Girmay emphasises the importance of inclusivity and resilience, advocating for collaborative endeavours and embracing imperfections as stepping stones to success. “I think we need to remember that we coexist with men. So when we celebrate women, let’s not exclude men. This is one of my main points that I want to highlight! Anything is achievable but you must give yourself a chance to make mistakes. I think that the important thing to note is nobody is perfect without going through some obstacles, so maybe the successful ones are not telling us enough about the bumpy road they went on. Ms. Girmay’s encounters with dignitaries, including her memorable interaction with His Majesty King Charles III during a visit to Bahrain, underscore her global impact and diplomatic acumen. At the time, she was representing MWPS (Migrant Workers Protection Society) and the King took a keen interest in her background, even at one point expressing his interest in visiting her home town, Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, to which she extended an invitation. “Although he is yet to take me up on it, I hope he reads this article and remembers!” she adds. Looking ahead, Ms. Girmay’s aspirations revolve around maintaining her diverse portfolio, amplifying voices through her association with Woman This Month and fostering international connections.
