This process has proven to take its toll on neighbouring teeth and the gums, leading to decay as well as shrinkage of the bone. For a more convenient alternative, the expert team of dentists at the American Mission Hospital opt for dental implants; considered to be the most natural, comfortable and permanent solution to replace missing teeth. “Made of pure titanium or titanium alloys, the artificial tooth roots are implanted into the jaw bone to support a replacement tooth or set of teeth,” explains Dr Andlib Tarique, a specialised dental surgeon with over 13 years of clinical experience. Initially, examination X-rays and impressions are taken for diagnosis, but the entire procedure is usually finished in two stages. “The first stage involves the surgical placement of the implant in the site of the missing tooth or teeth. Once the dental implants are placed within the jaw, the healing process begins. The bone starts to cover the implant surface until it fuses with it completely. This enables the jawbone to hold the implant firmly in place, thereby preserving the surrounding bone and allowing for improved function and a youthful look," says the doctor. In the second stage, after the healing period of three to six months, further impressions are taken and sent to the lab for the fabrication of the crown or bridge.
