Excessive bone loss leads to 'thinning' (osteoporosis) and bones can break more easily than normal. MIDDLE EAST MEDICAL CENTER OSTEOPOROSIS EXPLAINED Women lose bone material more rapidly than men, especially after menopause. At the age of 50, about two in 100 women have osteoporosis. This rises to one in four by the age of 80 and men can be similarly affected. Dr Hady Mohammed Gad, internal medicine specialist at Middle East Medical Center, explains the risks. “All men and women have some possibility of developing osteoporosis as they become older, particularly over the age of 60,” he says. Females are at a greater risk than males, as are patients with diseases such as vitamin D deficiency, an overactive thyroid, Coeliac and Crohn's disease, Cushing's syndrome, chronic kidney and liver ailments, rheumatoid arthritis, Type 1 diabetes and any condition that causes poor mobility. Osteoporosis usually develops slowly over several years, without any symptoms. However, after a certain amount of bone loss, the following may occur: l Fracture after a minor injury such as a fall. l Loss of height, persistent back pain and a stooping posture. The condition can be diagnosed by a radiological procedure called the DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan. It’s possible to prevent slow bone loss through exercise, a diet rich in calcium andvVitamin D, stopping smoking and excessive drinking and the use of hormone replacement therapy. “If you have osteoporosis, your doctor will be able to advise whether or not treatment is recommended,” says Dr Gad. “They may use a special risk calculator to look at your possibility of having a fragility fracture, to help with this decision.” Osteoporosis can be managed by drugs and also through lifestyle changes.
