www.womanthismonth.com 71 February 2015 BACK TO THE FUTURE The Mirai (which means future in Japanese), is Toyota’s new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) and it looks set to join the iconic Prius – the marque’s fully hybrid electric mid-sized hatchback – as the cars of choice for eco-friendly drivers. Using hydrogen to generate electricity, the Mirai achieves top environmental performance and combines it with the convenience and driving pleasure expected of any car. It has an immediately recognisable design; driving exhilaration stemming from superior handling stability achieved by a low centre of gravity; and quiet but powerful acceleration provided by the electric motor. Proving that it’s more than a one trick pony, the Mirai competes with traditional internal combustion engines, but uses no gasoline and emits only water vapor. The Mirai re-fuels in about five minutes and travels up to 450km on a full tank. Takayuki Yoshitsugu of Toyota’s Middle East and North Africa Representative Office believes that the Mirai represents a pivotal moment in automotive history as the new, environmentally-friendly car has zero emissions. “Based on Toyota’s steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability, the Mirai was designed to diminish our dependence on conventional fuels and reduce harm to the environment,” explains Takayuki. “With the Mirai, Toyota is taking the opportunity to really make a difference for future generations with this bold and inspiring vehicle.” FCVs are able to generate their own electricity from hydrogen, which can help make a future hydrogen-based society a reality. Hydrogen can be generated using a wide range of natural resources, renewable energy sources and man-made byproducts. When compressed, it has a higher energy density than batteries and is relatively easy to store and transport, therefore it has potential uses for a wide range of applications. The Mirai will hit the streets of Europe and the USA late this year. Toyota is building on its legacy of producing eco-friendly cars and looking towards the future with its latest offering, the Mirai. showcase
