Boho Chic Bohemian fashion is one of my personal favourites so thanks Fernanda Langhammer for featuring it in the November issue. I believe it’s really misunderstood as people think that only those who consider themselves ‘misfits’ or, for the lack of a better word, ‘hippie’ go for this style. Many miss out on the fact of how comfortable it is and its cheerfulness and versatility makes it so unique. I absolutely loved the three looks that are alternative and had hints of mainstream at the same time, with pieces that can be bought from popular stores. I always end up picking up stuff abroad not knowing that a lot of good items can be bought from the malls on the island. Sarah . Team Woman This Month with Christian Louboutin at the Vogue fashion Dubai Experience was the most liked picture on Instagram. ThinkPink post on #WTM is the most liked post on Facebook. Home Sweet Home I am a big fan of the magazine, and would like to congratulate the team for putting together great content month after month. The home improvement article this month couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I really like how each area has been dealt with in detail giving great ideas and where to head to shop. I can’t wait to check out The One’s new basics store in Enma Mall. The article about adding classic elements presents excellent ideas of how to go vintage without looking too loud or gaudy. I am currently looking to get some vintage suitcases to design a corner in the living room around them. Fatima. Well Child Check-Ups Thanks for introducing me to this absolutely wonderful idea. Until now I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a ‘well child check-up’. I am a mother of a two-year old and have questions round the clock. I do have an extremely helpful paediatrician, but I feel, like me, many other mothers must be disturbing him with general queries. Google helps but a final word of assurance from your doctor gives more confidence. Scheduling a well child check-up is an excellent concept, so I can have all my questions answered, and can monitor the health of my child in a much better way. Najia. November 2015 www.womanthismonth.com 53 LIFESTYLE | parenting Often, a child only visits a paediatrician when they are sick. This way, the paediatrician does not have the opportunity to look at the child’s overall health. The symptoms of a health problem can often be masked by a temporary illness that could be recognised at a well-child check-up. This kind of check-up should be scheduled when a child is not sick. It is an outstanding way to monitor your child's health and establish a strong connection with your paediatrician. The well-child check-up is designed to track your youngster's growth and development, address your questions and concerns and guide you on what to anticipate next in the journey of raising a healthy kid. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommends that children visit their paediatrician for a well-child check-up as a new-born; at three to five days after birth; by one month; at two, four, six, nine, 12, 15 and 18-months, two years and two and a half years; and once a year between the ages of three and 21 years. The AAP’s age-specific recommendations for preventive paediatric care cover the following areas: - Medical history; - Measurements such as height and weight; - Blood pressure; - Sensory screening, vision and hearing; - Developmental, behavioural and emotional assessment; Parents all have questions about their children's health, but so often these burning queries go unanswered. Dr Jinan Harith Darwish tells us that well-child visits are the perfect time to pull together any concerns you might have and get all the answers. Round the Clock Healthcare - Physical examination; - Immunisations; - Anticipatory guidance in areas such as injury prevention and nutrition counselling; - Dental referral. A well-child visit is a critical opportunity to detect a possible developmental delay or disability and for early treatment of potential problems, which can lessen the future impact on both the child and family. The goal of check-ups and well-child care is to prevent future health problems and to detect current problems early before parents or children would notice them. Luckily, most children are healthy, and that's certainly how we want to keep them. In addition, wellchild visits allow paediatricians to promote behaviours conducive to healthy development and to give age-appropriate counselling or anticipatory guidance, such as the use of time-outs instead of harsher forms of discipline, and increase knowledge of child-safety practices. Physician guidance has also been found to increase the likelihood that parents will read to their child and that a child will be breastfed. Before a well-child visit, we recommend compiling a list of questions that you might have about your child's health or development. Your paediatrician can help you navigate through problems such as sleeping, eating, toilet training, attention and learning problems and social behaviours. Don't be cautious to ask questions or divulge information that you think is important. You are your child's most important advocate and uniquely positioned to help your paediatrician understand your child and your family better and provide various tailored preventive measures you as a parent can incorporate into your daily lives. g 20 November 2015 www.womanthismonth.com FASHION | get the look A flowing dress and suede boots can take you straight to the last years of the swinging sixties or the early seventies. The style is updated, without losing its appeal, with the addition of a wide-brimmed hat and aviator sunglasses, bringing you back to 2015. The dress is an important element in this free-spirit style. It can be long or short and in intense colours and prints or simple white cotton. The ethnic vest adds an extra touch without going over-the-top. Tassel details are the crème-de-la-crème of subtle touches and a patent leather shoulder bag is the carrier of choice. CHICK HIPPIE Alessandra Ambrosio Bohemian style is easily spotted at music festivals all over the globe and in young girls’ wardrobes. However, how to make it more sophisticated? We’ve created three different looks to inspire you. BOHO CHIC 2. Hat: Marks & Spencer; 2. Sunglasses: Dolce & Gabbana at Sunglasses Shop; 3. Dress: H&M; 4. Vest: Monsoon; 5. Shoulder bag: Next; 6. Fergie Kate Bosworth 1 2 3 4 5 6 44 November 2015 www.womanthismonth.com The living room should be just that, a place where the whole family can gather in comfort whether to catch up with each other’s news at the end of the day, watch favourite TV programmes or just chill out and enjoy each other’s company. As the cooler weather approaches jazz up your space with plush throws in fake fur or velvet, find good value options at Home Centre in City Centre Bahrain and The One, at Al Aali Shopping Complex. For a budget option check out The One’s new basics store at Emna Mall in Riffa, which has a selection of good quality, unusual pieces at prices significantly reduced from the main store, or ID Design’s outlet store on the Budaiya Highway. Another instant update can be performed by changing your curtains and accessories and this need not be a bank breaking exercise. Bahrain has an abundance of tailoring shops which will run up curtains relatively cheaply and both the Souq and Palace Avenue are great sources of materials whether you fancy bright or sombre, light or more heavyweight. For a dramatic look, and one which is not recommended if you have kids or pets, add around 20cm to the length measurement of your new drapes and allow them to pool on the floor giving extra focus to your windows. Adding a rug can bring warmth to your room scheme for the cooler months. I’m a big fan of animal prints and am currently scouring the island’s furniture outlets for zebra stripes but, if you fancy something more traditional, the Middle East is, of course, one of the best places to purchase investment pieces in the form of Persian and Afghani carpetry. If you’re an expat looking to make a carpet purchase, you’d be well advised to ask a local friend to accompany you as this is one instance where bargaining is absolutely essential. There are various carpet shops in Adliya’s Shawarma Alley and Oasis Handmade Carpet Centre in Manama is also highly recommended and popular. If you’re looking to make a significant style statement, then new furniture is really the way to go. One of my favourite stores is Bo Concept in Seef. It’s certainly not cheap but you know you’re getting quality and I love to just wander round for inspiration. If you’re on a budget, take that inspiration and head to Gulf Auctions in Adliya. The island’s population is nothing if not transitory and the auction house frequently clears out homes for people whose postings have come to an end. So, while there’s a fair amount of junk, it’s a great place to find hidden gems but you really must bargain, bargain, bargain. And don’t forget, if you’re thinking of new furniture, it doesn’t have to be a whole suite. A statement chair or concept coffee table can really lift the look of a room, again without breaking the bank. Check out Details off the Budaiya Highway for designer pieces to add interest to any scheme.
