Dr Reginald Varadarajulu, consultant – neurology explains them to us. Headaches can be broadly classified as follows: Tension Headaches: These are the most common, occurring most frequently in women over the age of 20. They are caused by the tightening of muscles in the neck and scalp, with poor posture and stress being contributing factors. These headaches are recurrent and last from several minutes to several days. Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are a type of non-throbbing, vascular headache that mostly affect men. The pain is described as severe, burning and penetrating. The duration of the headache can last for as long as six weeks at a time. Migraines: A migraine is a throbbing, vascular headache that typically affects one side of the head. This severe headache is one of the top 20 most disabling diseases in the world. Having a family member with migraines increases your risk. Women are most likely to suffer migraines before, during or after menstrual periods. Botox treats chronic migraine effectively – your physician can advise whether Botox is appropriate for you. Dangerous Headaches: A headache occurring after trauma to the head or one which is associated with drowsiness, fever, vomiting, facial numbness, slurred speech or weakness in the limbs, convulsions or confusion etc, should be given immediate medical attention. Evaluation & Treatment of Headaches Although not life threatening, headaches must not be ignored. Popping over-the-counter drugs, in the long run, can damage the lungs and kidneys. An evaluation by a neurologist can ascertain the cause of your headache and prescribe suitable treatment.
