Woman This Month - April 2014

78 April 2014 www.womanthismonth.com We take a look at how a case of ovarian cysts was taken care of using a laparoscopic approach by this gynaecologist. The Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH) was presented with a case, where a woman with a history of pain in the abdomen had been diagnosed with a 12cm cyst (dermoid) in her ovary. The patient had been advised to undergo a conventional (open laparotomy) surgery to remove the cyst. Dr Kiran Bijlani, the consultant laparoscopic gynaecologist at the hospital, advised her that this cyst could be easily managed by a laparoscopic approach. It was explained to her that gynaecologic laparoscopy is an alternative to open surgery. The method A slender, lighted telescope is passed through small incisions, which allows a good view of the insides of the abdomen and pelvis. Open surgery, on the other hand, often requires a large incision. Laparoscopy can determine whether you have conditions, such as endometriosis or fibroids. It can also be a form of treatment. With miniaturised instruments, your doctor can perform a variety of surgeries, such as the removal of fibroids and ovarian cysts. Other procedures include tubal ligation (surgical contraception) and hysterectomy for benign and malignant pathologies. The benefits Laparoscopy generally has a shorter healing time than open surgery. It also leaves smaller scars. “The patient successfully underwent the laparoscopic removal of the dermoid cyst under general anaesthesia and is now recovering very well,” says Dr Kiran. “She was re-evaluated after a week and then after a month following her surgery. Her progress is good. She has returned to her routine activities, including walking on the treadmill. The patient was so thankful and satisfied that she underwent this modern surgery, rather than going through a long recovery period, pain and unwanted scars.” Why RBH? Dr Kiran explains that it has been possible to do complex and challenging gynaecological surgeries due to the availability of cuttingedge technology, including top-of-the-range MRI for diagnoses. Royal Bahrain Hospital has the latest laparoscopic equipment at hand, like harmonic scalpels and lasers. Above all, the hospital has the combined experience of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of Dr Stephen (general and bariatric surgery), Dr Narendra (general surgery) and Dr Ravi (urology and laser expert).
